As Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance campaigns across the country, his wife, Usha Vance, has been a near-constant presence by his side. Reporters huddled under the wing of JD Vance’s campaign plane often get a glimpse of a book's dust cover as Usha Vance climbs the towable stairs or stands on the tarmac. Though she’s a fixture on the campaign trail, Vance has not occupied a forward-facing public role like other political spouses. As JD Vance has noted on the campaign trail, she left her corporate law firm following the senator’s nomination for vice president in July. Usha Vance, an undergraduate student of history at Yale, went on to study early-modern history at the University of Cambridge.

Eight years after its publication, Vance’s book has found its way back onto the bestseller lists, thanks to his appointment as Donald Trump’s running mate. Less than 24 hours after Trump announced Vance was his vice-presidential pick, “Hillbilly Elegy” shot to the top of Amazon’s bestselling books. Close notably was nominated for “Hillbilly Elegy” at both the Oscars and the Razzie Awards, which is the ceremony that infamously honors the worst in cinema every year. “Hillbilly Elegy” chronicles Vance’s childhood in Appalachia, which he wrote was plagued with poverty, abuse and his mother’s addiction. At the time of “Hillbilly Elegy’s” release, the book was widely discussed as an explanation for Trump’s rise among the White working class.

She decided to try a book she had heard about often, bell hooks’ “All About Love: New Visions." Tiffany Stewart, a writer and producer in Los Angeles, first read “All About Love” two years ago with her reading group and reread it recently. “For bell, the love she talks about is a love for justice. 'All About Love' is a love letter to justice." She responded to hooks' insistence that love was more a verb than a noun, an act of will as opposed to an abstract ideal.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower," "The Fault in Our Stars," "New Moon" — none are safe from copyright infringement by leading artificial intelligence models, according to research released Wednesday by Patronus AI. The company, founded by ex-Meta researchers, specializes in evaluation and testing for large language models — the technology behind generative AI products. Alongside the release of its new tool, CopyrightCatcher, Patronus AI released results of an adversarial test meant to showcase how often four leading AI models respond to user queries using copyrighted text. The four models it tested were OpenAI's GPT-4, Anthropic's Claude 2, Meta's Llama 2 and Mistral AI's Mixtral. Patronus only tested the models using books under copyright protection in the U.S., choosing popular titles from cataloging website Goodreads.

In 2013, I made a seemingly simple decision: I started a list of books I wanted to read. AdvertisementI couldn't do that because if I threw away the book list, I would have to make a conscious choice. When I lost my book list, I actually felt freeTwo months ago, I reorganized my cloud account where the list was kept. Ever since my therapist had introduced the idea of throwing the list away, I had fantasized about the moment but never actually committed to it. Thus, I declare this the year of re-reading books I've loved in the past without worrying that I'm not spending my time reading something new.

Surfing the web in the 1990s and early 2000s was a slower endeavor, and fewer people had access to the technology. Those robust online forums have since been flattened into algorithmic social media feeds or hidden on messaging apps, a shift mourned by several video games with a shared fondness for bygone internet eras. Games like last year’s Videoverse, 2019’s Hypnospace Outlaw and the upcoming Darkweb Streamer use chat interfaces akin to AIM or MSN, as well as fake websites that greet people with MIDI songs and text written in bold fonts. Each experience has its own nostalgic lens but is a snapshot of lost expression, creativity and independence. Chantal Ryan, an anthropologist and the lead developer of Darkweb Streamer, a horror simulation game that merges the perils of modern streaming with the ’90s internet, bemoaned how high-quality independent services were often cannibalized by corporate interests.

“Colleen Hoover books always leave me speechless and in tears,” one TikTok reader said. James McBride Doesn’t Read Reviews. Here’s Why.

Between these poles are all forms of social media; and, on a different continent but still the same planet, reviews printed in the font you’re reading now. When it comes to all of the above, James McBride takes a page from Herman Melville’s short story “Bartleby, the Scrivener.” Like the titular clerk, McBride prefers not to — in his case, read reviews. I’m grateful that people read the work. If you’re writing about humans, you’ve got to be around humans. The big secret to writing good books is to stay around people, and not stay around what they write on the internet.”

Others have said they don’t want their work being used to train AI models, which could then be used to imitate them. Amazon removed the fake books being sold under Friedman’s name and said its policies prohibit such imitation. Author Jane Friedman found several books being sold under her name on Amazon, only she didn't write them — she suspects artificial intelligence did. The Authors Guild has been working with Amazon since this past winter to address the issue of books written by AI, Rasenberger said. And, she said, companies and publishers should continue investing in creative work made by humans, even if AI appears more convenient.

But she didn’t expect a backlash to strike six months before the book was published. In January, after a Goodreads user who had received an advanced copy posted a plot summary that went viral on Twitter, the review site was flooded with negative comments and one-star reviews, with many calling the book anti-Black and racist. Some of the comments were left by users who said they had never read the book, but objected to its premise. “It may look like a bunch of one-star reviews on Goodreads, but these are broader campaigns of harassment,” Rabess said. As a cross between a social media platform and a review site like Yelp, the site has been a boon for publishers hoping to generate excitement for books.

When it comes to queer books, the loudest headlines may be about bans and censorship, but a quieter truth about the state of LGBTQ books reveals the resilience of their authors and commitment of their readers. The queer titles debuting in 2023 are as full of joy as they are examples of resistance, and those in the industry say LGBTQ writers are only getting more ambitious. And while queer young adult books are often the target of book-banning efforts, these titles drove the highest gains in the category, the report found. When it comes to considering a queer future, and what’s next for queer books, that’s something that’s been on the mind of Suzi F. Garcia, the editor of Lambda Literary, a nonprofit that advocates for LGBTQ books and authors. She described the book as having a “queer core” and a sense of hope while discussing issues critical to LGBTQ and Black communities.

This year, I joined nearly 6.5 million other people and set a reading challenge via Goodreads. I love to read, but these days by evening — the time of day I’ve always allotted for reading — I’m falling asleep. Not only is this argument insufferable, made — and I’m just guessing — by insufferable people, it’s also the worst kind of ableism. Either way, listening and reading both engage audiences in the same act of absorbing a story. This idea that listening to books is cheating still circulates, especially when people share their reading lists and brag about their reading challenges — which is when “counting” takes on an even more literal meaning.
