Why Europe’s youth are flirting with the far-right

In this month’s European Parliament elections, far-right parties performed predictably well – but especially, and unexpectedly, among young people. Far-right parties enjoyed a similar uptick in support in the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Austria, and continued to do well in Italy. Gonzalo Fuentes/ReutersBut young voters appear less concerned by these roots, says Simon Schnetzer, author of a recent survey of Germany’s youth. But the burst in support for far-right parties could spell a darker trend. This success of far-right parties should be a warning to Europe’s mainstream.

Paris CNN —French soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé made a dramatic foray into the country’s election campaign this week, but don’t expect the striker to have an influence on the outcome. The far-right National Rally party of anti-immigration leader Marine Le Pen is leading in the polls, and most pundits suspect her populist movement has never come this close to power. Leaders of the French far-right National Rally, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, attend a rally ahead of the European Parliament elections where the party had huge success earlier this month. In 2006, Marine Le Pen’s father, far-right patriarch Jean-Marie Le Pen, suggested there were too many “players of color” on the national side. While millions will cheer them on at the Euros, they serve as a visible reminder of the country’s changing demographics — an issue which animates voters for the National Rally like no other.

Left-leaning newspaper Liberation described the snap election call as an "extreme gamble," while the center-right Le Figaro ran a brief headline Monday: "Le choc" ("shock"). That happened well before the humiliation of the European election results, in which Macron's Renaissance party got less than half as many votes as the far-right Rassemblement National ... In the meantime, other commentators and newspapers, such as Les Echos, have characterized Macron's move as a game of poker. Macron's supporters defend the president as a self-made and ambitious man who has a direct way of speaking to voters. "First, he has interpreted the vote for the European Parliament as a personal insult, as a rejection of his domestic policy direction.

AI is not ready for primetime

Generative AI tools, including ChatGPT, have been alleged to violate copyright. That’s not stopping Big Tech companies and AI firms, which continue to hook consumers and businesses on new features and capabilities. “Access to major generative AI systems in widespread use is controlled by a few companies,” said Venkatasubramanian, noting that these systems easily make errors and can produce damaging content. He believes bolder reforms may be necessary too, such as taxing AI companies to fund social safety nets. For now, current day generative AI users must understand the limitations and challenges of using products that are still quite far from where they need to be.

CNN —A high-profile lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s X targeting hate speech researchers appeared to stumble on Thursday as a federal judge sounded a skeptical note on many of the lawsuit’s allegations, suggesting that the company formerly known as Twitter hasn’t done enough to establish its claims. The judge in the case signaled he may toss out X’s claims but appeared undecided on whether to let the company amend and refile the suit. X has also blamed CCDH’s reports, which showcase the prevalence of hate speech on the platform, for amplifying brand safety concerns and driving advertisers away from the site. “You could have brought a defamation case; you didn’t bring a defamation case,” Breyer told X attorney Jonathan Hawk. Without ever clicking a mouse or touching a screen, Mark selected this command on his computer simply using signals from his brain. “I figured I had two choices: I could wallow in self-pity, or I could pick myself up by the bootstraps and do what I could to help,” Mark said. Synchron’s brain implant, the one Mark has, is called a Stentrode and consists of a stent with electrode sensors that can detect electrical brain activity. That external transmitter sits right above the internal transmitter and carries the signal from Mark’s brain to the computer almost instantaneously. New York CNN —Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a new social media target: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Following Musk’s recent critical posts about DEI policies and racial discrimination lawsuits against Tesla, the electric car company has omitted all language regarding minority workers and outreach to minority communities in its 10-K filing with the SEC made January 29. In Musk’s eyes, DEI is “just as morally wrong as any other racism and sexism,” he tweeted in December. And as recently as 2020, Tesla had been publishing its own corporate DEI reports, reaffirming its commitment to the mission. Last year, banks opened 2023 by forecasting layoffs, including for the investment bankers who suddenly had nothing to do following the pandemic-era M&A and IPO boom. Citigroup kicked off 2024 ominously, warning that it will lay off as many as 20,000 employees by 2026. The bank expects 2024 expenses to increase further to total $90 billion, up $2.8 billion from 2023, and much of that will be focused on hiring. CFO Barnum on Friday said the bank is gearing up for a "rebound in the investment banking wallet." Headcount declined 3% to 80,006 from 82,427, while compensation expenses rose to $24.5 billion from $23 billion.

REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 5 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI has filed with the U.S. securities regulator to raise up to $1 billion in an equity offering, according to a filing on Tuesday. In a Twitter Spaces event earlier in the year he said that rather than explicitly programming morality into its AI, xAI will seek to create a "maximally curious" AI. The billionaire, who has criticized Big Tech's AI efforts as ridden with censorship, in July launched xAI, calling it a "maximum truth-seeking AI" to rival Google's (GOOGL.O) Bard and Microsoft's Bing AI. In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, which has created a frenzy for generative AI technology around the world, but stepped down from the board in 2018. The team behind xAI, which launched in July this year, comes from Google's DeepMind, the Windows parent, and other top AI research firms.

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew was feted in Indonesia where it has 125 million monthly active users when he pledged in June to invest billions of dollars in the region. But the global giant failed to anticipate regulatory hurdles in its biggest market for online shopping. TikTok’s viral video app would provide Tokopedia with a powerful new growth avenue for its online shopping and payments business. Yet as tech companies from the People’s Republic to Indonesia pull out all the stops to lift growth amid waning investor support, desperate new alliances are bound to emerge.
