Goldman Sachs is having an identity crisis

I never thought I'd write this but … I miss the old Goldman Sachs. That was the voice of Goldman Sachs 2009 — the adamantine firm that managed to make its way through the crisis relatively unscathed. This sort of dry humor worked back then, but for today's Goldman Sachs, the joke just doesn't hit the same way. Van Praag — who was once dubbed "Goldman Sachs' Rococo PR prince" by The Observer — left the firm in 2012. It would be nice to see the old Goldman Sachs ferocity is still out there somewhere, even if it's not on Wall Street.

A recent article on the "Star Wars" films had numerous errors, The Washington Post reported. The story was one of five articles published using Google's Bard and OpenAI's ChatGPT technologies as the outlet pilots new AI initiatives, a representative of Gizmodo told Insider. These will all be designed to complement our journalism and give our editorial teams new tools to serve our audiences." Gizmodo reporters weren't the only ones angered at the flub — readers, too, expressed their dissatisfaction with the AI creation. At the same time, outlets — including Insider — have announced new initiatives to experiment with AI, with editorial procedures in place meant to prevent errors from being published.

NVDA YTD mountain Nvidia YTD performance Nvidia shares have, of course, been a stellar performer so far this year due in large part to its AI dominance. To estimate Nvidia's AI revenue opportunity, Goldman broke it down into two computing categories: training and inference. Here's a chart that shows how Goldman sees Nvidia's AI revenue opportunities shaking out from calendar year 2023 through calendar 2025 in each category. To put Goldman's AI computing revenue estimates into perspective: Nvidia's entire companywide revenue over the past three fiscal years totaled $70.5 billion. In an interview with CNBC that aired Tuesday, Elon Musk was asked about his tweeting. Musk said he'll say what he wants to say even if it leads to him, Tesla, or Twitter losing money. During an interview with CNBC's David Faber, Musk was asked about why he tweets the way he does. Faber pointed to a tweet from Monday in which Musk said Soros "wants to erode the very fabric of civilization" and "hates humanity." Faber asked why Musk continued to tweet such things and share his political opinions even though Tesla customers and Twitter advertisers may not agree with him.

The Federal Reserve could lift interest rates by another 75 basis points in total this year, Goldman Sachs says. The bank's chief economist suggested the Fed might raise rates at its March, May and June meetings to beat inflation. Most investors anticipate the US central bank will ease up on tight monetary policy or even start cutting interest rates this year as inflation cools. But with retail sales and payrolls surging and unemployment falling, there's a possibility the Fed may decide it has to keep ratcheting up interest rates. Higher interest rates encourage saving over spending and make borrowing more expensive, which tends to alleviate upward pressure on prices.
Shares of legacy automakers and parts manufacturers will attract new investors as they transition toward electric vehicles and green technologies, according to Goldman Sachs. As a result, the bank expects the company's stock to rise by 116% to $19 over the next 12 months. Shares of Visteon rose by 17% last year, and Goldman expects the stock to rise a further 15% to $160 in the next 12 months. Goldman Sachs expects GM's stock to rise by 20% over the next 12 months and reverse some of last's year 44% decline.
