The warehouse retailer is now offering its US members access to prescriptions for GLP-1 weight loss drugs through its low-cost health care partner Sesame. Costco first partnered with Sesame, a direct-to-consumer health care marketplace that connects medical providers nationwide with consumers, last fall when it began offering its members online health checkups for as low as $29. “The number one search term of Costco members seeking primary care on Sesame was around weight loss,” Goldhill said in an interview with USA Today. JPMorgan researchers estimate that 30 million people may be taking GLP-1 drugs by 2030, or around 9% of the US population. It also made a $100 million-plus deal to buy Sequence, a telehealth business that can offer virtual prescriptions, where appropriate, to patients for these weight loss drugs.

The shops have prompted both curiosity and innovation, adding to London’s long history of bagels — or “beigels,” as they were originally known here. Many of the new shops have similar stories: During the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, homesick New Yorkers in London started experimenting with bagel baking at home. Once the pandemic hit, Mr. Gomez, missing New York and dreaming of bagels, started watching bagel-making videos on YouTube and testing out recipes. Another bagel connoisseur, Francesca Goldhill, of London, spent hours in her mother’s kitchen trying to find a recipe that produced bagels similar to those from Brooklyn Bagel, her favorite when she lived in New York. She opened Bagels + Schmear in Hertfordshire, outside London, in 2022.

Costco members will soon be able to receive low-cost health care through a partnership with Sesame. In addition to $29 virtual visits, Costco members will receive discounts on other services. Through a new partnership with Sesame, a healthcare marketplace startup backed by Google, Costco members can receive virtual doctor's visits for $29, plus discounts on other telehealth and in-person services, Sesame said Monday. The move into primary care follows similar investments by retailers Walmart and Amazon, as well as from pharmacies CVS and Walgreens. In addition to $29 virtual visits, Costco members will be able to receive virtual mental health sessions for $79, health checkups for $72, and a 10% discount on other services.
