Morgan Stanley is expanding the use of OpenAI-powered, generative artificial intelligence tools to its vaunted investment banking and trading division, CNBC has learned. It’s most in-demand among salespeople and other client-facing staff who often field questions from hedge funds or other institutional investors, said Huberty. Productivity boostIn a recent demonstration, the GPT-4 based chatbot was able to summarize Morgan Stanley’s position on matters from copper to Nvidia to the finer points of standing up a data center, understanding industry-specific jargon and providing charts and links to source material. The tool is embedded within workers’ browsers as well as Microsoft Teams and Outlook programs to make it readily available. Understandably, Huberty says she is often asked if AI could ultimately replace the analysts who are creating the reams of research published under Morgan Stanley’s banner.

JPMorgan Chase has created a new global role overseeing all junior bankers in an effort to better manage their workload after the death of a Bank of America associate in May forced Wall Street to examine how it treats its youngest employees. The firm named Ryland McClendon its global investment banking associate and analyst leader in a memo sent this month, CNBC has learned. The move shows how JPMorgan, the biggest American investment bank by revenue, is responding to the latest untimely death on Wall Street. Later that month, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said his bank was examining what it could learn from the tragedy. Exceptions can be made for live deals, said the person, who declined to be identified speaking about the internal policy.

JPMorgan executive David Hudson told the publication that he returned to JPMorgan after working at Nomura in 2010 "to work for Troy." Rohrbaugh's other stops at JPMorgan have been head of global markets and head of macro markets. A senior JPMorgan executive who works with Rohrbaugh recalled that time during the pandemic.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 18 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley's (MS.N) third-quarter profit dropped less than expected as a strong performance in the bank's wealth management division offset a hit from lethargic dealmaking. The wealth management business, which has been a bright spot for Morgan Stanley in recent quarters, has reduced the lender's reliance on trading and investment banking, which are largely tied to economic cycles. "Our equity and fixed income businesses navigated markets well, and both wealth and investment management produced higher revenues." INVESTMENT BANKING WEAKNESSTotal revenue from investment banking fell 27% to $938 million, as global mergers and acquisitions activity showed few signs of improvement.

Third-quarter earnings season kicked off on Wall Street with JPMorgan and Citigroup reporting that headcount is up. In announcing third-quarter earnings, JPMorgan said headcount was up 7% over this time last year to 308,669. And the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about whether dealmaking — and therefore investment banking hiring — will come back next year. The investment bank, which was recently bought by Swiss rival UBS, said it currently has more than 2,000 staffers in that location. At Citi, investment banking fees were down 18% over last year, although underwriting fees have improved as companies look to sell more debt and stock.

"This quarter is all about higher interest rates for longer," said Mike Mayo, an analyst at Wells Fargo. "There is a constructive environment, and investment banking fees tend to be higher through the end of the year," said Jason Goldberg, a banking analyst at Barclays. Despite the renewed optimism, investment banking activity remains depressed. As rates rise, bond prices fall, representing losses on paper that would be realized if the banks sold the bonds. More broadly, "we're back into this environment where investors think interest rates are going to remain higher for longer," he said.

Venkatakrishnan has been seeking to stabilize Barclays' investment banking franchise after a shakeup in the division's leadership in January led to an exodus of dozens of bankers. Barclays has also hired more than 30 investment bankers and promoted another 20 bankers in various positions since then. REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON/DUBLIN, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Societe Generale's (SOGN.PA) much-hyped new strategy plans were given a thumbs down by investors on Monday, underscoring uncertainty over European banks as they face a brittle economy. "There are more questions about the future and the economy," Legras said, adding that transformative mergers between banks, which investors have waited for in vain, remained unlikely. Reuters GraphicsThat dampens the prospects for Europe's banks, whose valuations are low and static, said one adviser who works with top executives from the region's lenders, adding that investors struggle to see much promise for the sector. European banks' modest earning power has dampened investor appetite for their shares, which often trade at just a fraction of book value - the sum of their assets. While in the United States, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley are valued at around 1.5 times book value, Germany's Deutsche Bank, Dutch lender ABN Amro, France's Credit Agricole and Britain's Standard Chartered are valued at just half book value or less.

The Standard Chartered bank logo is seen at their headquarters in London, Britain, July 26, 2022. The bank said it expects full year NII to be up about 8% at about $57 billion. The bank's full year NII outlook remains unchanged at 20% growth, Chief Financial Officer Dermot McDonogh told analysts. Overall, its profit slipped 18% in the second quarter as a fewer deals hurt investment banking revenues. Sluggish deals have been a sore spot across Wall Street with global investment banking activity plunging to $15.7 billion in the second quarter, the lowest since 2012, according to Dealogic. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File PhotoNEW YORK, July 11 (Reuters) - Wall Street banks are expected to report higher profits for the second quarter as rising interest payments offset a downturn in dealmaking. That offsets the doldrums in investment banking, where revenues have been depressed by rising interest rates and economic uncertainty. Goldman has internally announced a slew of leadership changes in its investment bank. Goldman's Aasem Khalil will take on Posnett's role as global head of investment banking services. A fresh face will now lead one of Wall Street's most powerful investment banking groups. She ultimately served as co-COO of TMT and head of Internet investment banking before being appointed head of investment banking services. Succeeding Posnett as head of global investment banking services is Aasem Khalil, a Goldman partner and 26-year veteran of the Wall Street bank.
Kim Posnett was just named head of Goldman's all-important TMT investment banking group. Posnett, 43, has long been one of the most senior figures at Goldman's investment bank. Posnett was previously the head of Goldman's investment-banking services unit, which acts as a salesforce for the global IB division. The former co-head of Goldman's TMT franchise will become co-chairman of the unit. The former would result in the IB services group, which functions, in effect, as a sales force.

At the start of that period, banking was still dominated by a blue-blood class. But the tickets were available mainly to men from the right sort of background. Instead a complex system of semiotics did the job of weeding out the riffraff. A flattened vowel pronunciation, a vulgar word for lavatory, the wrong sort of shoes, and you were excluded without even understanding why. In Britain, the system’s overseers had an acronym by which the untouchables were designated: NQOCD, for “not quite our class, dear.”
“UBS today announced the takeover of Credit Suisse,” the Swiss National Bank said in a statement. Credit Suisse shareholders will be largely wiped out, receiving just 1 UBS share for 22.5 Credit Suisse shares they own. UBS (UBS) and Credit Suisse rank among the 30 most important banks in the global financial system, and together they have almost $1.7 trillion in assets. “Given recent extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances, the announced merger represents the best available outcome,” Credit Suisse chairman Axel Lehmann said in a statement. The Swiss National Bank said it would provide a loan of 100 billion Swiss francs ($108 billion) to UBS and Credit Suisse to boost liquidity.
StanChart declined to comment on the reports of a fresh bid, while FAB did not respond to requests for comment. While StanChart's balance sheet, staff numbers and global footprint dwarf FAB's, it is worth half as much. StanChart's shares rose by 11% on Thursday after Bloomberg News reported that a possible FAB bid would value its target at $30 billion to $35 billion, a significant premium to the Asia-focused banking powerhouse's $24 billion market value. A second shareholder questioned whether FAB's shares would be attractive to British-based holders of StanChart stock. "I can't think shareholders would relish adding a small Gulf bank to Stan's current geographic mix," the investor added.
