In this article MAR Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNTMarriott International's business operations and growth are solid, CEO Anthony Capuano told CNBC Monday, amid layoffs of more than 800 corporate employees and continued sluggishness in China's tourism market. Marriott International reported net room growth of 6% year-on-year and room rate growth of 2.5%, driven by a strong return of group travel, which Capuano called the "bright, shining star" for the business today. The company raised its year-end guidance for net room growth, and added 9 million new Bonvoy members in the third quarter. That measure turned out to be corporate layoffs, first reported by the travel media company Skift on Nov. 14, which later linked to a notice of "mass layoffs" of 833 Marriott employees posted on a Maryland government labor website. watch nowCapuano denied that the company — which doubled in size during the past decade — grew too big, too fast, at least in terms of corporate employees, instead calling the move a much-needed "reorganization" of its global corporate structure.

Why Apple is betting big on India

I think one estimate put, at one point, I think China was producing something like 90% of the world's iPhones. So when we talk about, you know, Apple manufacturing elsewhere, it's going take a long time to significantly ramp up iPhone production elsewhere. And you know, opening a physical Apple store often for Apple is a sign of a big deal. But you know, Apple looking at India going, wow, we've only got 7% of market share there, we could grow huge amounts. And of course, as we know, with Apple, the hardware is the, you know, one side of the equation, but also, you know, Apple makes billions of dollars off of its services business, which includes things like its App Store fees, it's Apple Pay, Apple TV, all of those other products and services.

Starbucks is giving its plastic cups a makeover
  + stars: | 2024-04-18 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
The chain announced Thursday that the plastic cups for all sizes of its cold drinks have undergone an environmentally friendly redesign that uses up to 20% less plastic compared to the current version. The new cups were developed internally at Starbucks as part of its ongoing sustainability efforts to reduce its waste and carbon output in half by 2030. In addition to using less plastic for the cups themselves — Starbucks projects the new cups will save more than 13.5 million pounds of plastic going to landfills annually — it is “projected to reduce emissions and conserve water in the production process,” the chain said. Starbucks said it conducted tests with baristas and customers to ensure the changeover doesn’t reduce the cups’ sturdiness or ability to keep drinks cold. Priestland suggests that Starbucks develop reusable and returnable on-the-go cups to help them fully achieve their sustainability goals.

Citigroup on Friday posted first-quarter revenue that topped analysts' estimates, helped by better-than-expected results in the bank's investment banking and trading operations. Revenue slipped 2% to $21.10 billion, mostly driven by the impact of selling an overseas business in the year-earlier period. Investment banking revenue jumped 35% to $903 million in the quarter, driven by rising debt and equity issuance, topping the $805 million StreetAccount estimate. Fixed income trading revenue fell 10% to $4.2 billion, edging out the $4.14 billion estimate, and equities revenue rose 5% to $1.2 billion, topping the $1.12 billion estimate. Now, analysts want to know if Citigroup can maintain its previous guidance for full-year revenue and expense targets.

Excluding one-time costs related to Levi's restructuring, the company reported earnings per share of 26 cents, ahead of Wall Street's estimates. The sales slump was primarily attributed to a shift in Levi's wholesale orders, which boosted profits by about $100 million in the year-ago period. For the last couple of years, Levi's has been moving away from wholesalers and doing more of its sales through its own stores and website. If Macy's store closures or other challenges to department stores affects Levi's business, she expects direct-to-consumer sales will offset those losses. During the quarter, sales of items like denim skirts, dresses and tops were up 19% in Levi's direct-to-consumer channel, said Gass.

Here's what the new Coca-Cola bottles look like. However, the label and caps will not be made from 100% recycled plastic. Signage is seen at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau headquarters in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 29, 2020. WASHINGTON — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's ambitious rule proposal to crack down on credit card late fees, a $14.5 billion income stream for credit card companies, will potentially roll out in January, nearly a year after it was released. Global corporations and small banks alike are pushing back against the impending rule finalization with some help from business-friendly lawmakers. Late fees, which can reach $41 under a legislative loophole allowing banks to charge unimpeded under a certain threshold, disproportionately affect poor Americans and those with low credit scores, the American Economic Liberties Project reported. "In contrast to the CFPB's unfounded statements, late fees are not impermissible, so-called 'junk fees' that fail to serve any purpose," the Chamber wrote, referencing the Biden administration's overall initiative to shrink excessive surcharges.
