People always ask me why I dislike parabolic moves. In other words, parabolic moves force you to be a trader. I will fight no one who wants to buy Palantir because I sense that one will be the last name to go down. But parabolic moves are intoxicating. If we just had the 10-year bond move to 5%, I wouldn't even bother addressing the hidden dangers behind parabolic moves.

What we learned from the 2024 World Series
  + stars: | 2024-10-31 | by ( Grant Brisbee | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +9 min
You’re the winner, friend, because you’ve learned something about baseball during the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series, four games to one. They might have played the sloppiest inning in World Series history, if not the sloppiest game in World Series history. It was certainly the sloppiest game from a World Series team facing elimination, and I’m not fact-checking that. The World Series was promoted like “Godzilla vs. Kong,” except one of the monsters got hurt before he could do anything.

Vince Vaughn Turned This Interview Into Self-Help

But as good as Vaughn can be with darker characters, I never connected those parts to the man who played them. Ahead of our interview, I made the perhaps-common journalist’s mistake of expecting to talk with someone akin to the playfully glib guy from those comedies I love. (That’s in no small part thanks to how Vaughn’s role as a world-weary, wiseass former detective in the new Apple TV+ series “Bad Monkey” scans as a mature update of his comedic persona.) But what I was expecting from Vaughn wasn’t what I got. Instead, I found someone more provocative and earnest, who came most alive when he put me under the conversational microscope.

There could be risks involved with using psychedelics, and research is still being done to evaluate therapeutic uses. Barry, now my husband, was the person who introduced me to LSD almost 50 years ago when I was 23. Barry and I use psychedelics on average two or three times a year. For example, not long ago, we thought we'd take acid while camping in southern Oregon, but I got poison oak. They really are the key to the success of our long-lasting marriage.

When a company performs well and I interview its CEO on CNBC, I consider the stock's performance before fashioning my questions. Maybe the company had been poorly run and the guest is a new CEO who is turning it around. Once Wood picks a stock, that company can do no wrong, which is code for she can do no wrong. Watch “Apocalypse Now” (1979), “Full Metal Jacket” (1987) or “Platoon” (1986) and you should know what war really means. “Ungentlemanly Warfare” features a disreputable band of riff raff brought together for a super-secret mission. Ritchie makes no such concessions to authenticity in “Ungentlemanly Warfare.”Henry Cavill is Gus March-Phillips in Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." Even when a war movie doesn’t actively mislead you, the promise of being privy to an unvarnished, authentic and extreme experience can be seductive. “It would decay in eternal peace.”Compared to that kind of cult of authentic war, “Ungentlemanly Warfare” feels fairly harmless, and not in a bad way.

Going into Alex Garland’s astonishing new film, “Civil War,” I expected to be irritated by the implausibility of its premise. In one 2022 poll, 43 percent of Americans said they thought a civil war within the next decade was at least somewhat likely. “Civil War” has received plenty of adulatory reviews, but Garland has also been widely criticized for eliding the ideological forces driving America’s fracturing. But now that I’ve seen “Civil War,” which is neither glib nor cynical, Garland’s decision to keep the film’s politics a little ambiguous seems like a source of its power. Still, it’s not a stretch to interpret the film as a premonition of how a seething, entropic country could collapse under the weight of Donald Trump’s return.

CNBC's Jim Cramer reflected on the earnings season so far, saying investors shouldn't judge stocks based purely on figures from a financial report. he said, referring to earnings season. With the question of whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza now before the International Court of Justice, the Biden administration has struck a tone of glib dismissal. “Meritless” seems to be the agreed-upon term among U.S. officials. “The charge of genocide is meritless,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken intoned from a podium in Tel Aviv this week. “Meritless, counterproductive, and without any basis in fact whatsoever,” blustered the National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. Top Israeli political and military leaders have themselves helped to bolster the case against their government.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. Any debate that doesn’t feature Chris Christie at the front of the highlight reel is a bad night for Christie.

The debate – hosted by Fox News, which has amplified many of Trump’s false claims he won the 2020 election – exemplified the impossible conundrum at the center of the GOP race. Trump, exploiting his unrelenting support among GOP primary voters, has pulled off the feat of wielding multiple indictments as a political shield. But Ken Cuccinelli, who is backing DeSantis despite serving in Trump’s administration, argued that the Florida governor had used Trump’s absence to make a valuable connection with Republican voters. So will Trump stick with his strategy of refusing to elevate his rivals by appearing with them on stage – for instance, at the next GOP debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California next month? “In the next debate, there’s not going to be any Atlanta surrender and counterprogramming,” Kall said.

Almost any of the 16 Giorgio de Chirico paintings in “Horses: The Death of a Rider” could sustain an exhibition by itself. A couple from the late 1920s are less polished, and you could reasonably call “Two Horses on a Seashore,” 1970, a little glib. As the exhibition title suggests, every canvas also holds one or more horses, often backed by one of the mysterious landscapes he’s known for. The majestic white steed in the title piece, “Death of a Rider,” rears up on a twilit beach, letting its rider tumble off like Icarus behind it. In the distance stands a city on a hill; nearby, two voyagers or gods watch from a rowboat.

Siobhan Roy would smile at her brothers while shivving them in the back. Roman Roy would wither his siblings with mockery. And Connor Roy would throw all their trophies in the closet and scream “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!”Connor Roy is the Jan Bradiest of the Roy siblings in “Succession,” which returns to HBO for its fourth and final season on Sunday. Like the middle child from “The Brady Bunch” whose lament about lucky big sis Marcia became a rallying cry for overshadowed siblings of a certain age, Connor is the child who can’t crack into the cool crowd even when that crowd is his own family. Alan Ruck, who plays Connor with gross entitlement and glib self-delusion, can’t help but feel the sting.

Iggy Pop Isn’t About to Whitewash His Past

I don’t think that it’s an equal participant in some kind of debate. I don’t think so. If you’re sitting there enjoying the structure, then I don’t think that’s entirely good news for the writer. I don’t know that I would actually pursue the subject as a playwright. You know, I’m told there is such a thing as the long view.
New York CNN Business —KFC Germany apologized for an “unacceptable” message sent to customers on Wednesday, which appeared to tie a sales promotion to the annual commemoration of Kristallnacht. KFC app users in the country received a message encouraging them to mark the day with crispy chicken and cheese from KFC, according to Twitter users who shared screengrabs of the message in German. “Earlier today an automated push notification was accidently [SIC] issued to KFC app users in Germany that contained an obviously unplanned, insensitive and unacceptable message,” KFC Germany said in a statement emailed to CNN Business. KFC Germany didn’t confirm the language used in the alert. KFC’s message resulted in similar outrage among some German customers and has been widely criticized on social media.
But a shorter and more satisfying narrative would not have been as true to the material, or to Remarque’s pacifism. This "All Quiet on the Western Front” doesn’t have a real plot, per se. For most of the movie, viewers and soldiers alike know that peace is coming at any moment. War is a kind of anti-narrative, which causes a rupture in the satisfying progress of the plot. “All Quiet on the Western Front” is an antiwar movie that refuses to turn war into a tale of progress or success.
The economic news is mixed: Inflation and interest rates are high, but the job market looks solid.
