Tim Walz, chosen on Tuesday to be Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, was a longtime educator – just like his wife. Gwen Walz has taught in public, alternative and migrant schools, as well as prisons. She also served as an administrator and coordinator at Mankato Area Public Schools, a school district in the congressional district her husband represented from 2007 to 2019. Walz first met her husband in western Nebraska, where she began her career teaching English, according to her official biography. Walz was educated at Gustavus Adolphus College and Minnesota State University.

To the Editor:Re “Electric Cars Are Boring,” by Ezra Dyer (Opinion guest essay, April 13):If E.V.s are boring, I guess I am OK with being bored. owner, I no longer have to stop at the gas station to fill up in all kinds of (Chicago) weather. in various types of inclement weather. I am now at the age where simpler (boring) is better. It’s because they are 1) too expensive; 2) take too long to charge; 3) don’t go far enough on a single charge.

Hatem Abudayyeh, national chair of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network and a spokesman for the Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine, said elected officials’ condemnations of Palestinians were “not acceptable. The reason for this escalation is decades of Israeli crimes--decades of home demolitions, of stealing of land, of killing of Palestinian people in their home and in the streets.” He said that about 2,000 people rallied outside the Israeli consulate in Chicago this weekend and that many Palestinians in Chicago have relatives in Israel. “And so there is a lot of fear. And then of course also to just mourn the loss.” He said that “while the Palestinian-Israeli situation is complex, there is no complexity to what happened this weekend. Terrorist actors committed the most heinous atrocities on innocent civilians Israel has ever seen.”

North of Chicago and dotted along Lake Michigan are a handful of affluent suburbs that make up the city’s North Shore. One of these communities is Glencoe, Ill., a 3.72 square mile village of 8,612 people with a median household income of $212,132, according to Census data. It’s home to the Midwest’s most expensive residential real estate, according to Realtor.com. Glencoe’s 60022 ZIP Code median listing price is $3.26 million, surpassing the next priciest Midwestern ZIP Code—that of Kenilworth, Ill., about four miles southeast of Glencoe—by close to $1 million. Anchored by a buzzing downtown with local boutiques and restaurants, Glencoe has transformed into a village of its own, says luxury broker Jena Radnay of @properties.
