I got inked by the world’s oldest tattoo artist
  + stars: | 2024-07-10 | by ( Kathleen Magramo | )   time to read: +11 min
Buscalan, Philippines CNN —The first sound I heard upon reaching Buscalan was that of heaving and panting. At 107 years old, Whang-Od is the world’s oldest tattoo artist. She was dressed in a loose, colorful tie-die shirt and bold patterned pants, her own tribal tattoos on full display. Photos, identification cards and other mementos left by visitors on the thatched roof of the hut where Whang-Od's grandnieces (and apprentices) tattoo. “(My friends who gave tattoos) have all passed away,” Whang-Od told CNN in an interview in 2017.

“Zofran girlies rise up.”Seeing that phrase on my screen as I idly scrolled TikTok made me stop and watch the whole video, but probably not for the reasons its creator wanted. Zofran is a drug that prevents nausea and vomiting. I’ve taken it a bunch of times — most memorably at a hospital via IV, when a doctor told me he wanted to “stop the barf cycle” during a bout with norovirus. It also comes in pill form, and it’s often prescribed for cancer patients to offset the side effects of chemotherapy. The Zofran girlies video asserts that “literally everyone” on TikTok is talking about Zofran, because “it’s so hard to get” — a claim I’d never heard before.

Read previewThe normies are coming for corpse paint, and the goths are pissed about it. He magically springs from the page to offer them the cosmetic kit, and voilà, they immediately transform into pale-faced, black-eyed corpse paint pros. AdvertisementIn comments on the ad posted to YouTube, a corpse paint purist complained the trendy palette would divorce the look from its black-metal roots. "My gripe is: why wasn't this sent to someone who does corpse paint?" Logically, I know this would never happen, but it would be nice for working makeup artists and the goth community to get some recognition."

The Girlies Know: ‘Oppenheimer’ Was Actually About Us
  + stars: | 2023-09-19 | by ( Iva Dixit | )   time to read: +4 min
Here the girlhood parallels move beyond the facetious to acquire a darker quality, as shame begins to erode Oppenheimer’s sense of self. The great Oppenheimer realizes that no amount of personal brilliance can counter the force of the state. Near the film’s end, Oppenheimer silently reckons with visions of what his brilliance has wrought: unimaginable suffering and fire as the invention he fathered wipes out civilization itself. For a Great Man like him, it took the twin shames of the bomb’s destruction and public disgrace to have this life-altering yet basic realization about his own powerlessness. This is a rule and a warning that life has drilled into girls from age 13, if not sooner.

‘Bottoms’ Review: Physical Education
  + stars: | 2023-08-24 | by ( Elisabeth Vincentelli | )   time to read: +2 min
It ultimately fizzes out, but “Bottoms” confirms that Seligman and Sennott are major new forces in American comedy. A lot does click here, including several delicious supporting performances, most notably the former N.F.L. running back Marshawn Lynch as the fight club’s loopy faculty adviser and Ruby Cruz as Hazel, a cool classmate whom, naturally, PJ does not even see. For most of its tight running time, “Bottoms” hovers on the cusp of greatness. BottomsRated R for typical teen language, fight-club violence and football run amok.

By her own admission, the actor Anastasia Graff is a maximalist who loves “girlie things,” so it’s not altogether surprising that she wanted a periwinkle kitchen for her 1930s-era West Hollywood home. Still, such a bold choice could send some interior designers into a tailspin. Clad in white-painted wood siding with a wide porch, it had appealed to Graff because it reminded her of the traditional wooden homes on the East Coast, where she grew up. But it didn’t hurt that the place is part of local lore: It once belonged to the Russian-born composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky, who lived in Los Angeles from 1940 to 1969, while he conducted the L.A. Philharmonic both downtown and at the Hollywood Bowl. “You realize in Los Angeles, there’s a story behind every house,” says Graff.

I use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Hyaluronic Serum and The Good C Serum. She has a personal line of products called Katalaya Skin Care; right now I’m using her Rejuvenating Moisturizer. When I want to make it look like I’ve slept well, I’ll mix my foundation in with my moisturizer for light coverage. I love the Dior Forever Skin Glow Foundation because it looks like skin and it doesn’t take much for it to seamlessly blend. I’m somebody who takes excess blush and puts it on my eyes, so right now I’m using Dior Rouge Blush in Grand Bal.

Bridget Jones Deserved Better. We All Did.

You couldn’t pass a Borders or Barnes & Noble megastore without catching Bridget’s cool blue-green gaze. Seemingly overnight, Bridget was to digital correspondence what Chandler Bing was to comic timing: a fresh metronome for the last gasp of the 20th century. She was the toast of book clubs, the subject of editorials, a lightning rod for morning-show debate and fodder for late-night comedy. Some readers were charmed by Bridget Jones; others were disgusted. That if we don’t enjoy our jobs, we just stick around and, heck, sleep with the boss (who never calls us back).”

The corporate girlies are not okay
  + stars: | 2023-03-11 | by ( Juliana Kaplan | )   time to read: +7 min
On TikTok, corporate girlies document their 9 to 5 grinds, from outfits to work set-ups. That's led corporate girlies to rethink how they define themselves by work, and who they are as workers. Corporate girlies often have the stability of a high-paying, flexible job with benefits and perks. Self-described corporate girlie Elizabeth Raman-Grubbs — who stressed her views are hers, and not her employer's — said the very "glamorized" aesthetic of the lifestyle on social media has shifted as layoffs swept the industries where corporate girlies dwell, like tech and other professional services. But Raman-Grubbs is still bullish on corporate girlies.
