Hit and missOf course, quality is a big factor in a film's box office success, too. That pullback has already begun with the 2023 summer movie season. Starting the first Friday in May and running until Labor Day weekend, the summer movie season typically represents 40% of all movie ticket sales for the year. So far through July 2, the summer box office has tallied $1.88 billion. In summer 2022, the box office got a boost from Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick," a Paramount and Skydance feature.

Wealthy shoppers are increasingly turning to discount stores like Aldi, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General. This is because of inflation, improved product quality, and changing attitudes to discount stores. Morgan Pierce, who The Journal reported earns about $200,000 a year working at McDonald's corporate office in Chicago, visits Aldi and dollar stores for staples. People who The Journal spoke to said that the idea of shopping at discount stores was no longer as stigmatized. Soaring inflation during 2021 and 2022 combined with better-quality budget products and a rising number of brand-agnostic shoppers have all helped to push wealthier shoppers to discount stores.

Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros.” movie and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” both animated films, have racked up big ticket sales this year. The successes of "Super Mario Bros." and "Spider-Man" also reflect a new post-COVID-19 trend at box offices, Hollywood insiders say. In his book, “Creativity, Inc.,” Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull credited Pixar's brain trust with the studio’s early box-office triumphs. Catmull and other members of the original brain trust are gone, though Docter remains, now in the role of chief creative officer. During the pandemic's peak, when many cinemas were closed, Disney launched three Pixar films directly to Disney+_in the U.S., bypassing theaters.
