They’re on track to miss the mark by more than 40%, delivering only about $55 billion, according to recent forecasts compiled by LSEG. The electric-vehicle industry, for one, was a serial SPAC user whose exuberance sputtered badly. Dressing them up as acquisitions of private firms by listed shell companies enables the participants to play by looser rules. SPAC investors buy shares in the empty vessel before its sponsor and takeover target agree on a valuation.

Bank of America upgraded three luxury stocks that are bucking the negative trends afflicting the broader sector in Europe. The investment bank expects profit margins to decline by one percentage point for the sector even as third-quarter revenue is seen growing modestly. Meanwhile, the investment bank upgraded Ermenegildo Zegna and Pandora to buy, and Hugo Boss to neutral from underperform. The investment bank believes a similar pattern will likely emerge in Europe with spending on the continent peaking early this year. Despite Pandora shares' 45% rally this year, the Bank of America analyst still considers it "one of the cheapest stocks in all of Consumer Discretionary."

SMALL MANUFACTURERS APLENTYItaly is home to thousands of small manufacturers that cover 50-55% of the global production of luxury clothing and leather goods, consultancy Bain calculates. LVMH announced in May it had taken a majority stake in Nuti Ivo Group, an Italian company that has specialised in making leather products since 1955. Kering managing director Jean-Francois Palus said the luxury group is increasingly looking to bring production in house. "Italy has not created a (major) luxury hub, but we have entrepreneurs who have the ability to activate the right relationships at the right time," said Stefania Lazzaroni, general manager at Italian luxury industry association Altagamma. "Italian groups are now more managerialised, more organised and also stronger, which makes them more open to thinking together," he said.

Nudged by private equity funds, those supplying the booming luxury goods industry are now finding strength in unity. Largely family-owned and small in size, these businesses often struggle to meet the changing needs of the luxury brands they work for. "Luxury brands have been growing exponentially: our customers needed us to grow with them," said Nicola Giuntini, whose Tuscany-based company makes luxury coats and jackets for brands including Celine, Burberry (BRBY.L) and Stella McCartney. PRODUCTION NICHESItaly's manufacturing sector has also been a hunting ground for big luxury brands keen to secure their supply chain. Italian private equity firm XENON International, for example, has bet on producers of materials and finishes for luxury items which it has grouped together in MinervaHub.
In a landmark deal announced Tuesday, Estée Lauder Companies (EL) said it was acquiring its longtime partner Tom Ford. The deal will allow two of Tom Ford’s current partners, Ermenegildo Zegna and Marcolin, to extend their existing licensing agreements, the companies said. Marcolin will continue making sunglasses and optical frames with the Tom Ford brand. Tom Ford and Estée Lauder have been partners for more than 15 years, launching the Tom Ford Beauty brand together in 2006. Estée Lauder Companies, which is home to other global beauty brands such as Clinique and Bobbi Brown, said Tuesday that it expected annual sales of Tom Ford’s cosmetics line to reach $1 billion “over the next couple of years.”“As an owned brand, this strategic acquisition will unlock new opportunities and fortify our growth plans for Tom Ford Beauty,” Estée Lauder Companies President and CEO Fabrizio Freda said in a statement.
