CNN —At least seven people have died after some of the heaviest rain in years hit central and eastern Europe, causing flooding and widespread disruption. The heavy rainfall continued to pummel the region into Sunday. Rescuers have been working hard to rescue hundreds of people left stranded by heavy rainfall there. CNN —Prisoners at a Russian maximum security penal colony have killed one staff member and took others hostage, Russian state media reported Friday. Inmates captured correctional facility staff at a disciplinary commission meeting, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia told state media outlet TASS. The incident took place at penal colony IK-19 in in the town of Surovikino, in Russia’s southern Volgograd region. At least three prisoners participated in the attack, according to TASS, and a hostage rescue operation is underway. Video circulating on Russian social media appears to show four prison staff members taken hostage, one of whom is covered in blood.

CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed Kyiv’s troops are fighting inside Russia, days into the surprise Ukrainian cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region that has become a major embarrassment for the Kremlin. Now into its sixth day, the attack on Kursk is a significant development in the more than two-year old conflict. CNN —Ukraine’s military has claimed it sank a Russian submarine in a port in Crimea, in what would be another major setback for Moscow in the occupied peninsula. The submarine Rostov-on-Don was hit in the port of Sevastopol on Friday, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said in a statement Saturday. “The boat sank on the spot,” the General Staff said, without providing further evidence. The submarine was “severely damaged” in a Ukrainian missile attack in September 2023, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. In addition to striking the submarine, Ukrainian forces also severely damaged four S-400 anti-aircraft missile launchers on Friday, the Ukrainian General Staff said.

CNN —Residents in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar staged a rare protest on Saturday over electricity cuts and water supply interruptions due to a power grid failure amid record-high temperatures. Angry residents gathered on the streets near residential buildings shouting “Give me light,” after experiencing power cuts for several days, videos posted on social media show. CNN —A court in Moscow has ordered Yulia Navalnaya, the wife of late Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, to be arrested in absentia, her spokesperson said Tuesday. The Basmannyy District Court in Moscow accused Navalnaya of “participation in an extremist organization,” her spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said in a post on social media. CNN —A police officer who was part of the security escort for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was killed in a traffic accident in the German city of Stuttgart on Monday. Orban was on his way to the airport, after watching Hungary defeat Scotland in a dramatic Euro 2024 match the previous evening. The Hungarian prime minister wasn’t harmed in the accident and continued his journey to Stuttgart Airport as planned, a police spokesperson told CNN. The 61-year-old officer was critically injured in the collision and later died in the hospital, according to police. CNN —A mixed martial arts fighter and relatives of a regional official were among the gunmen who carried out attacks on places of worship in Russia’s Dagestan on Sunday, according to local authorities. Russian state news agency TASS, quoting law enforcement agencies, reported Monday that five of the attackers who targeted the cities of Derbent and Makhachkala on Sunday had been identified. London CNN —Nuclear-armed countries are strengthening their arsenals and several have made ready new nuclear-armed or nuclear-capable weapons systems amid rising geopolitical tensions, a new report has found. “While the global total of nuclear warheads continues to fall as Cold War-era weapons are gradually dismantled, regrettably we continue to see year-on-year increases in the number of operational nuclear warheads,” the institute’s director Dan Smith said. “Accordingly, there is a growing concern that North Korea might intend to use these weapons very early in a conflict.”Protesters against nuclear weapons outside the US mission to the UN. Moscow has continued to make threats involving the use of nuclear weapons in light of Western aid for Ukraine, and in May 2024 carried out tactical nuclear weapons drills close to the Ukrainian border, SIPRI said. “We have not seen nuclear weapons playing such a prominent role in international relations since the Cold War,” said Wilfred Wan, the director of SIPRI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Program.

CNN —The daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin rarely make public appearances, but this week they took part in panels at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Putin has said his daughters work in science and education and that he has grandchildren, but he has never confirmed their names.
