Trump’s Big Advantages as the Election Year Unfolds
  + stars: | 2023-11-21 | by ( Gerald F. Seib | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Since the last presidential campaign, former President Donald Trump has complained repeatedly that the political system is “rigged” against him. As the 2024 election season draws near, the system actually does appear to be rigged—in his favor. The current structure of U.S. presidential elections helps the leading Republican presidential contender in significant ways. Thanks in part to years of work by the former president’s campaign and allies, the party’s primary rules and calendar are designed to help a front-runner sew up the nomination quickly. That would be an advantage in any case, but it may matter even more in a year when Trump’s legal troubles in multiple civil and criminal trials could mount as the primary calendar unfolds.

Can the GOP Become a Real Working-Class Party?
  + stars: | 2023-01-27 | by ( Gerald F. Seib | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The drama in the House of Representatives that ended on Jan. 7 with the late-night election of Kevin McCarthy as speaker after four days and 15 ballots revealed a Republican party coping with an identity problem, if not a crisis. Is today’s Republican party conservative or populist? Is it more intent on slashing government spending or preserving entitlement programs? Did it underperform in the 2022 midterm elections because it failed to mobilize its base or because it failed to reassure other voters wary of extremism? The divisive House debate offered no clear answers.
The Midterm Elections: Back From the Political Abyss
  + stars: | 2022-12-14 | by ( Gerald F. Seib | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The 2022 midterm election results were important for a host of reasons: Control of the House, control of the Senate and the shape of the Biden presidency all were up for grabs. Yet the most important outcome may have been found elsewhere. Thanks to this year’s orderly voting, the nation appears to have taken a step back from the political abyss.
