CNN —Donald Trump believes presidents have almost absolute power. In his second term, there will be few political or legal restraints to check him. It’s not guaranteed that just because Trump has massive power he will spurn constitutional checks and balances. No other president has come into office armed with a Supreme Court ruling that grants significant immunity to presidents for official acts. Attempts to prosecute Trump’s political foes on spurious grounds, meanwhile, could theoretically see mass resignations of Justice Department staff.

Disputes across the country are brewing over the role of local election boards and how much power they have to question – or even throw out – election results. In Georgia, for instance, Trump-backed members of the state election board recently passed controversial rules that could allow local election boards responsible for certifying results to conduct investigations that threaten to delay certification. One of the Georgia rules, the “Reasonable Inquiry Rule,” would allow election officials to conduct a “reasonable inquiry” before certifying election results. The petitioners in the case argue that the rule would give partisan board members a wide ability to cast doubt on, or even reject, election results. In some cases, the threat of legal action has been enough to deter officials from pursuing challenges to the certification process.

CNN —During the first whirlwind week of her second presidential campaign, Kamala Harris locked up the support of the Democratic Party, recruited thousands of volunteers and hauled in $200 million in donations. Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling her “racist,” following a tense House Oversight markup Thursday evening that quickly devolved into personal attacks. Speaking to reporters on Friday about the incident, Crockett said, “That’s all it is, it is racism. After a series of votes in response to Greene’s explosive rhetoric, Crockett made a dig that appeared to be directed at the Republican. Crockett said on Friday that Greene is unserious and does not respect the process. The top Democrat on the committee, Rep. Even by the rock-bottom standards of the 118th Congress, Thursday night’s three-hour voting session of the House Oversight Committee was perhaps a new low. The members of the Republican-led committee gathered after 8 p.m. in a Capitol Hill hearing room ready for a fight — some members of the audience were even said to have brought alcoholic beverages to enjoy the show.
