Haze and a chlorine odor will likely descend upon Atlanta on Thursday, as officials struggle to contain the fallout from a Georgia chemical lab fire that ignited Sunday. With weather models predicting a wind shift, there is a high likelihood that people across metro Atlanta will wake up on Thursday morning seeing haze and smelling chlorine, GEMA/HS said in the release. While the air quality findings announced Wednesday were above the action level for chlorine, GEMA/HS says workers on site have continued to make progress in neutralizing the product. Periodic increases in chlorine levels around the facility are expected as this process continues, the agency said. GEMA/HS says chlorine levels in the air sit at safe levels.

CNN —Thousands of Florida residents have been forced to evacuate as the state prepares for rapidly strengthening Tropical Storm Helene, which could bring powerful winds, flooding and life-threatening storm surge to areas already hard-hit by recent hurricanes. The Big Bend area faces the most serious storm surge: up to 15 feet of it is possible. Over in Sanibel, one couple who met during Hurricane Ian in 2022 and nearly lost everything are now going to weather Tropical Storm Helene together, CNN affiliate WINK reported. Large clouds move over Havana due to the proximity of the tropical storm Helene, on September 24. Officials in neighboring Pinellas County warned hundreds of homes would likely flood with a higher storm surge than in past destructive storms.

The potential Georgia connection surfaced a day after authorities in Washington state said four county election offices had to be evacuated as election workers were processing ballots cast in Tuesday’s election, delaying vote-counting. Election offices in Seattle’s King County and ones in Skagit, Spokane and Pierce counties received envelopes containing suspicious powders. Political Cartoons View All 1237 ImagesTacoma Police spokesperson William Muse said a message inside the envelope received by Pierce County election workers said “something to the effect of stopping the election." It was not immediately clear how authorities came to suspect that a letter might have been sent to the Fulton County election office or whether similar ones went to election offices in other states. "Election officials should be free from fear and intimidation, which is why I’ve called on the General Assembly to increase penalties for election interference,” Raffensperger said.

CNN —If you’re ever stranded in your car because of a winter storm, being prepared can be the difference between survival and serious harm or death. Winterizing your carRegardless of whether a severe storm is coming, prepping your car to handle winter weather is something you should do every fall, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Replace worn tires and fill low tires with air to the pressure recommended for your car. • Keep your car in proper working condition by checking the heater, defroster, brakes, brake fluid, ignition, emergency flashers, exhaust, oil and battery. You can exercise in your vehicle to keep warm, but don’t exhaust yourself while doing so or clearing your windows or exhaust pipe.
