The founder of the first gold-tracking ETF is still bullish on the commodity two decades later. "Things are looking good for the rest of this year and for next year," George Milling-Stanley told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. Even the postelection pullback in gold futures and the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) hasn't tarnished the record run this year. "This is why we've seen the stock market go up dramatically, why we've seen the cryptocurrencies go up dramatically." But the precious metal, and in turn, the GLD ETF, are "starting to claw back some of the lost ground," Milling-Stanley said.

On the campaign trail, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made a notable promise to retirees: No taxes on Social Security benefits. Any changes to Social Security would require at least 60 Senate votes, and Republicans would therefore need some Democratic support to pass those changes. "It's hard for me to imagine that Democrats would be willing to provide votes to get over that 60-vote threshold and weaken Social Security solvency," said Charles Blahous, senior research strategist at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, who has also served as a public trustee for Social Security and Medicare. The Trump campaign has pushed back on those findings, calling the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget "consistently wrong" in a statement to CNBC when the report was released. The Social Security trust fund used to help pay retirement benefits is projected to run out in 2033, according to the program's actuaries.

A National Geographic documentary crew may have found partial remains of the foot of Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, the famed mountaineer who disappeared on Mount Everest 100 years ago. The climbers were trekking Everest in late September when they spotted a disembodied foot inside of a boot that appeared perfectly preserved yet undeniably old. It is not known whether the pair ever reached the summit — an important Everest mystery among climbers and historians alike. CNN —Botanists have grown a long-lost tree species from a 1,000-year-old seed found in a cave in the Judean Desert in the 1980s. But the scientists conducting the new research weren’t able to identify the type of tree from the seed alone. However, the sample didn’t match any of the known Commiphora species in her database. The tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Yet the tree, which is related to the myrrh tree that’s famed for its resin, never gave off any kind of scent.
