The ebullient group included Angela Alsobrooks, who later that day became one of two African American women elected to the U.S. Senate, which has never had more than one Black woman serving at a time. Dawn Moore, the first lady of Maryland, was there too, as was the mayor of Bladensburg, Takisha James, and members of the Town Council, all of whom are Black women. She had brought her grandson to witness history. Instead they left with “tears in our eyes,” she said.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. It also means that, for the first time in history, Maryland will have a Black senator, governor and mayor of its largest city, Baltimore. Hogan could never quite replicate the support he received from Democrats as governor in his Senate campaign. Her victory is a relief for Democrats, who were facing a daunting Senate landscape before this race came on the map. Neither made their history-making potential a key message on the trail, but it was resonant in a state where Black voters – and Black women in particular – are a crucial part of the electorate. Alsobrooks’ home turf of Prince George’s County is home to one of the largest middle-class Black populations in the country. CNN —George Baldock, a British-born soccer player who played for Panathinaikos and the Greek national football team, has died at the age of 31, Greece’s Ministry of Citizen Protection confirmed to CNN. “The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Attica Security Directorate,” Greece’s Ministry of Citizen Protection told CNN Sport in a statement.
