The mayor of Waukesha, the seat of a reliably Republican county outside Milwaukee, Wisconsin, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president on Wednesday — the first time the formerly Republican city leader is supporting a Democrat for commander in chief, the campaign said. Wisconsin is a key battleground state that could be a critical piece of Harris or Trump's path to victory on election night. In 2000, just 32% of voters in Waukesha County voted for Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore, while in 2020 39% of voters there supported President Joe Biden. On Thursday, GOP former Michigan Rep. Fred Upton also endorsed Harris, saying in a statement that he has never voted for a Democrat for president "until now." Other former GOP members of Congress that have endorsed Harris include Liz Cheney, R-Wyo and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. Harris also touts endorsements from GOP former Sen. Jeff Flake, former Vice President Dick Cheney, more than a hundred Republican former national security officials, former Georgia Lt. Gov.

“I think, frankly, that ad from the Trump campaign is a little bit of like throwing, you know, stones when you’re living in a glass house,” she said. He asked how many undocumented immigrants Harris would estimate the administration has released into the United States during Biden’s presidency. Baier asked Harris about Laken Riley, the 22-year-old Georgia nursing student who was killed while jogging in February. Harris maintained over the course of the interview that the immigration system is broken – a position held by Democrats and Republicans. “I do not believe in decriminalizing border crossings, and I’ve not done that as vice president,” she said.

CNN —Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney will campaign with Vice President Kamala Harris in Wisconsin on Thursday, touting her endorsement of the Democratic presidential nominee in the crucial battleground state, a senior campaign official told CNN. Cheney, who previously told CNN she was committed to doing what was necessary to stop Trump from returning to the White House, endorsed Harris last month in North Carolina, another swing state. She later said she expected to campaign against Trump in battleground states throughout the fall. Broader push to win over Republican votersThe campaign’s efforts to win over Republicans voters will extend beyond the Cheney event. Harris-Walz is spending significant money in this space as part of a more than seven figure paid media strategy, the campaign official said.

Though Republicans have branded themselves as the party of capital-P patriotism since the Nixon years, Democrats sought to reclaim American pride this week. A striking number of this year's speakers focused on military might and distinctly American values, from Harris herself to Iraq war veterans. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. For the past decade, Loge said that Democrats have been "shy" or "embarrassed" about embracing classic American patriotism, but that Harris and Walz are attempting to reframe the association with the flag. "Democrats serve too," Kauffman told Business Insider.

Nearly 30 GOP members were cited as part of the new "Republicans for Harris" initiative launched Sunday. These include Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary under Trump, and national security official Olivia Troye — who worked as Vice President Mike Pence's national security advisor. By publicly defecting on the Republican presidential nominee, these officials leave a target on their back for attacks from Trump. That statistical dead-heat is why the Harris campaign is targeting undecided Republicans within who may be persuadable against their party's nominee. "Vice President Harris and our campaign are working overtime to earn the support of my fellow Republicans who care about defending democracy and restoring decency," he added.

CNN —During the first whirlwind week of her second presidential campaign, Kamala Harris locked up the support of the Democratic Party, recruited thousands of volunteers and hauled in $200 million in donations. The next test of Harris’ appeal will take place Tuesday in Georgia, where her campaign is hosting an Atlanta rally. “The groundswell of support around the vice president is real and it is meaningful,” Dan Kanninen, Harris’ battleground state director, told reporters Monday. “Tomorrow, Vice President Harris’ visit will highlight her brighter vision for the future, where our freedoms are protected and every American has a fair shot. “It would be a Category 5 hurricane,” said one top Democratic official nervous about Biden considering what would happen if the president stepped aside. Biden campaign aides have spent the last couple of days pointing to metrics like some of their best grassroots fundraising days and a surge in job applications since Thursday. Biden is heading to the Camp David presidential retreat where he was expected to spend the rest of the weekend. CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. Debates are always more about style than substance, and President Joe Biden’s style was simply awful. Did President Joe Biden come off as a leader or a loser? And yes, the visuals in this first presidential debate of the cycle were phenomenally important.

Immediately after the polls closed on Saturday night, CNN projected that the former South Carolina governor had come up short to Trump. During the fourth quarter of 2023, Haley out-raised Trump, $24 million to $19 million. In January 2024, as the rest of the GOP field winnowed, Haley’s fundraising again bested Trump’s, $9.8 million to $8.8 million. To her credit, Haley has taken dead aim at both Trump and Putin, accusing the former of emboldening the latter. CNN —As the dust settles on the tenure of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, there are lessons the Republican Party should learn. As the Republican caucus considers its next steps, they must choose a leader whose stewardship signals a clear break from the past. Here are the ways that Trump triggered the events that fueled McCarthy’s downfall. In 2022, Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker, a former football star whose controversial candidacy was fueled by his connection to the former president, met the same fate. Fast forward less than a year and Trump was nowhere to be found when McCarthy’s fate as speaker hung in the balance.

Trump had to agree, for example, to make no threats on social media against co-defendants, witnesses and the 30 unindicted co-conspirators. The former president has excoriated special counsel Jack Smith, who indicted him twice, on social media and in speeches. Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst, said that the terms were fair and did not infringe on Trump’s rights. Trump’s many late-night social media eruptions will make it hard for observers to believe that he will stick to the conditions to which he’s agreed. By Monday evening, Trump had already posted on his social media network about the bond.

A Georgia grand jury indicted Donald Trump on charges related to his effort to overturn the 2020 election. Jordan earlier this month received a subpoena to testify before the grand jury. The Republican Trump has said he expects to be charged this week by Fulton County DA Fani Willis in what would be his fourth criminal indictment. Georgia criminal law makes it a felony to directly or indirectly try to deter a witness from testifying in any court or before a grand jury. In his Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote: "Would someone please tell the Fulton County grand jury that I did not tamper with the election." Trump was indicted in early August by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., on charges that he conspired with others to overturn his defeat in the national election in 2020.

Trump believes he will be among them and is already fundraising off of the possibility of more criminal charges, casting them as Democratic efforts to interfere in the 2024 election. But there will be key differences between the potential case in Georgia and Trump’s previous indictments. Investigators have long suspected the breach was not an organic effort sprung from sympathetic Trump supporters in the Republican stronghold. Smith, for example, has asked a judge to open a trial into the election interference charges in January – just two weeks before the Iowa caucuses. It’s too early to speculate how headlines about these cases could weigh on Trump or Biden in November 2024.

Former President Donald Trump kicked off the week of his expected fourth indictment by railing against the judge overseeing the federal case charging him with illegally conspiring to subvert the 2020 election results. In a pair of social media posts just after midnight Monday, Trump attacked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan as "highly partisan" and "very biased & unfair!" "She obviously wants me behind bars," Trump wrote on Truth Social at 1:14 a.m. "The people who mobbed that Capitol were there in fealty, in loyalty, to one man," Chutkan said, according to a transcript of the hearing.

Former President Donald Trump looks on before the first round of the LIV Golf Bedminster golf tournament at Trump National Bedminster, August 11, 2023. A Georgia prosecutor probing whether Donald Trump and his allies illegally sought to overturn the state's 2020 election results is expected to seek an indictment from a grand jury next week. "I'll certainly answer whatever questions are put in front of me," said Duncan, a Republican who has criticized Trump's false conspiracy theories about the 2020 election. Special Counsel Jack Smith, who brought the Washington case, has also charged Trump separately in Florida with illegally retaining classified documents after leaving office and with obstruction of justice. In a post on his Truth Social site on Saturday, Trump again called the Georgia investigation a "witch hunt."

Former Georgia Lt. Gov Geoff Duncan, a Republican, said Saturday on CNN that he has been told to appear Tuesday before a Fulton County grand jury to testify about the efforts by Trump and his allies. Independent journalist George Chidi posted on social media later Saturday that he’d been told to appear before the grand jury on Tuesday too. The witnesses Willis has subpoenaed to testify when she presents her case include Duncan, Chidi and former Georgia state Sen. Jen Jordan, a Democrat. Georgia law is unusual in that special purpose grand juries – which have broad investigative powers – are not permitted to issue indictments. When the subpoenaed witnesses appear before the regular grand jury, those grand jurors will hear the witnesses’ testimony for the first time with a narrower purpose at hand: to approve or reject indictments.
