KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Two people died and 51 others were feared buried after a landslide hit a campsite outside Kuala Lumpur early Friday, Malaysia’s fire department said. A fire department official in central Selangor said 79 people were believed to have been at the campsite in Batang Kali, around 31 miles north of Kuala Lumpur, when the incident occurred. Three people were injured while rescuers were searching for the estimated 51 missing people, the official said. The scene of a landslide at a campsite in Malaysia. According to its website, there are three camping sites with facilities at the farm popular with locals and that people can bring their own tents and equipment or rent them from the farm.

So far, the pandemic has mainly dealt Macau bad hands and really bad hands. But the latest shuffle of the deck has finally given the gambling hub some strong cards. Over the weekend, the Macau government granted the city’s six incumbent casino operators provisional licenses which would allow them to keep running their businesses for the next 10 years. An affiliate of Malaysia’s Genting Group unexpectedly joined the bidding for licenses in September but its last-minute gambit lost out eventually. Genting Group was always a long shot but the incumbents will breathe a sigh of relief now.

The highly anticipated announcement signals stability and continuity for the Macau operators who have invested more than $50 billion in the Chinese special administrative region in the past 20 years. Officials in Macau, the world's biggest casino hub, told a news briefing the main considerations for granting licences included ensuring local employment, developing overseas tourist markets and developing non-gaming projects. Galaxy and Sands may invest more than 20 billion patacas each, while the others will invest less than 20 billion patacas. Altogether the total will be around 100 billion, TDM said. Negotiations with the Macau government are almost complete the broadcaster said, with the bidders having reached agreement about what each of them proposes to do over new 10-year licence term which begins in 2023. Yet Sands’ New York shares rose nearly 6% on Thursday after results revealed it is having better luck in Singapore. The Lion City now accounts for three quarters of Sands’ top line, up from 22% in 2019. By contrast, in Macau, formerly the world’s largest gaming hub, Sands suffered a loss of $152 million, as gaming revenue sunk to around 10% of 2019 levels.
