New research is exploring another dimension to the puzzle of how people experience this infection: genes. Hollenbach says it’s the job of HLA molecules to present pieces of proteins to the immune system so they can be recognized if they’re ever encountered again. The researchers then took a closer look at this group to see if there were any similarities in the genes that coded for their HLA molecules, and there were. So folks with these HLA molecules likely already had some preexisting immunity against SARS-CoV2 and were able to clear the virus before it caused symptoms, Hollenbach said. Genes, Zeberg said, are likely only one part of reason why someone develops long Covid, and there are probably a slew of genes involved.

MADRID, June 15 (Reuters) - Spain's Santander (SAN.MC) on Thursday announced it appointed Pedro Castro e Almeida as regional head for Europe, replacing Antonio Simoes, who was hired to head Britain's Legal and General Group (LGEN.L). As regional chief, Castro will be responsible for the bank's businesses in Europe, including its units in Spain, Britain, Poland and Portugal. The appointment will take effect on September 1, subject to customary approvals, with Simoes continuing in his current position until then, the lender said. Castro will lead the transformation in the region and report to the group's CEO, Hector Grisi, while maintaining his current position as CEO of Santander Portugal. LONDON, May 15 (Reuters) - Britain's financial services industry has commissioned a report to lay out what needs to be done to keep London a globally competitive financial centre, which it said would span law and regulation, market practice and cultural change. Sector body the Capital Markets Industry Taskforce (CMIT), which commissioned the report, said it aims to ensure that Britain remains a leading global financial centre that supports the development of high-growth UK and international companies. "It will be a comprehensive, concise, and easily understandable report that sets out the new market model needed to help deliver growth across the broader UK economy," CMIT said in a statement. Britain has already undertaken more than 30 public consultations on reforming listing and other financial rules, and is in the final stages of approving a draft financial services law to implement these so-called Edinburgh Reforms. Separately, top financial sector officials said in March they would present a "roadmap" in the autumn to "kickstart" London's role as a post-Brexit global financial centre by 2030 by offering a "vision" for the future.
