A California baseball stadium featured in the Hollywood blockbuster “A League of Their Own” was destroyed by a fire late Thursday, officials said. The Jay Littleton Ballpark, in Ontario, California, went up in flames about 11:30 p.m. and is a “a total loss,” city spokesperson Dan Bell said. “If you look up and down the street, you have baseball lovers everywhere,” Ontario Eastern League president Aaron Matthiesen told NBC Los Angeles, adding that some were in tears. “This ballpark has been the heart of Ontario, the historic ballpark, the place to play for our kids. “I have two young kids in our league, and the dream has always been that they get to play at Jay Littleton,” he said.

Alan Ruck, center, and the cast of "Succession" photographed during the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards in Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Saturday, Feb. 24. The cast of “Succession” led the nominations among the television categories with five – nabbing the top honor for best ensemble. “Oppenheimer” reigned victorious with three of those awards, while “Barbie” was shut out. This is the first SAG Awards since last year’s prolonged actors’ strike in Hollywood – a fact that was brought up several times throughout the evening – and is also the last major entertainment awards event before next month’s Oscars ceremony.

AI’s deflationary winds will blow away profits

LONDON, June 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The prevailing expectation for artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) impact on humans is laden with doom. Yet the history of technological innovation suggests humans will see at least one tangible benefit from AI: lower prices for what they consume. One innovation that could give consumers an advantage over companies is AI agents. Streaming services like Netflix (NFLX.O) and Walt Disney’s (DIS.N) Disney+ could also suffer if AI agents take off. Junior lawyers, call centre operators and advertising copywriters, to name but a few, should probably be afraid, very afraid of AI’s looming threat.

In the late 1990s, beginning at age 15, Geena Rocero was a beauty queen working the transgender pageant circuit in the Philippines, where shows are broadcast on national television. Her victories earned her both money and fame. She said her signature wig style — a side bang and a flipped end — became a trend unto itself among fellow beauty contestants. In the Philippines, Ms. Rocero lived openly as a transgender woman with the support of both her relatives and chosen family, but she could not legally change her sex. ◆ ◆ ◆Written by Brett Anderson and Julia Moskin | Narrated by Brett Anderson

In the back seat of a car en route to the West Village, she reflected on her shift from model to advocate. “And then I felt like I entered a new trap, which is respectability politics.”Ms. Rocero said she never felt fully comfortable in the role of trans role model. At first she was excited to assume what she called an Angelina Jolie persona — a beautiful, world-trotting champion of social issues. “Ines was the first one,” Ms. Rocero said, referring to the French model Ines Rau. In the West Village, Ms. Rocero once again jaywalked while approaching Rosecrans, a combination florist and coffee shop.
From “Thelma & Louise” and “A League of Their Own” to this year’s coming-of-age drama, “Fairyland,” back-seat docility just wasn’t an option. Next year will mark two decades since the creation of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. When her daughter was a toddler, Ms. Davis couldn’t help noticing that male characters vastly outnumbered female characters in children’s TV and movies. How the women were represented, their aspirations, the way young girls were sexualized: Across children’s programming, Ms. Davis saw a bewilderingly warped vision of reality being beamed into impressionable minds. “I started to wonder, What if I got the data to prove that I’m right about this?”

Witnessing Arab women flourish on the small screen, showcasing their talents and breaking through the presumption that they are oppressed is widely significant. That is not to say Arab women live in a utopia in the Middle East. The implication is that these Arab women have no depth to their character other than their attire. Just as common are images of Arab women living as concubines in harems waiting to please men. But the achievements of the past week should help to break down the stereotypes surrounding Arab women and inspire them to dream big.
