A wind-whipped storm tore through Northern California on Wednesday, knocking down trees, snarling highways and transit, and leaving tens of thousands of people without power. Days’ worth of rain fell on some places in just a few hours. It was the season’s first major atmospheric river, a type of storm that can deliver prodigious amounts of water in a narrow band from the Pacific Ocean. “This is a major storm the likes of which we haven’t seen in over a decade,” said Melanie Coon, a spokeswoman for Puget Sound Energy. Wind gusts in some places exceeded 90 miles per hour — equivalent to the winds of a hurricane.

CNN —A powerful “bomb cyclone” will combine with an atmospheric river to unleash over a month’s worth of rain, hurricane-force wind gusts and feet of mountain snow to parts of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to cause significant urban flooding, debris flow on roadways and river flooding. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines,” the National Weather Service office in Seattle warned.

Germany's Thyssenkrupp on Tuesday reported a 1-billion-euro ($1.06 billion) impairment on its struggling steel division as the industrial powerhouse flagged "gloomy volume" expectations and structural challenges in the sector. The firm said its net loss of 1.5 billion euros in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30 — after deducting minority interest — was mainly due to asset impairments totaling around 1.2 billion euros, of which 1 billion euros were undertaken by its Steel Europe division. "In respect of our main strategic issues, the current fiscal year will be a year of decisions – especially for Steel Europe and Marine Systems," CEO Miguel Lopez said in the firm's Tuesday statement.
