The Lindaburys' debt to Atrium Health from 2009 grew over time to include almost $100,000 in interest charges. Americans owe $220 billion in medical debt, according to KFF, a nonprofit health policy research, polling and news organization. Research conducted by the Urban Institute found that medical debt is more common in the South and among people in low-income ZIP codes. In 2021, the institute found that three North Carolina counties were among the 10 U.S. counties whose residents held the most medical debt. Recognizing the burden that medical debt places on consumers, some states have moved in recent years to remedy the problem.

Here are 5 cities where the highest number of Gen Z renters are rent-burdened:While financial experts recommend limiting housing expenses to no more than 30% of income , this can be challenging in a number of cities where younger renters shoulder the heaviest load. Housing expenses in the analysis were not not limited to rent, Zillow Economist Kenny Lee tells CNBC Make It. In fact, nearly 6 out of 10 Gen Z renters (18- to 25-year-olds) are "rent-burdened," according to a recent Zillow analysis of U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey data. This is common in this economy, says Lee, since many of the best-paying jobs for Gen Z are located in cities where the rent is most burdensome. Find a roommate"A lot of renters have been relying on finding roommates to split the cost of housing," says Lee.

Such tariffs have the potential to significantly increase the prices consumers pay on nearly everything that isn’t made entirely in the US, of which there are very few goods. And as we witnessed during the pandemic, “stockpiling by consumers can actually lead to higher prices in and of themselves and empty store shelves,” he said. That said, here are five items that are likely to get more expensive with any new tariffs Trump imposes that may make sense to purchase before he takes office. But if you need a new one – or will soon – now’s a good time to consider buying. Laws sharply limit the roles that federal troops can fill in US law enforcement. National Guard troops that report to state governors can support law enforcement, but the Posse Comitatus Act bars active-duty and federalized Guardsmen from acting as law enforcement. "You can fill in the blank on who those might be, but probably more Republican governors that are more friendly to President Trump. Those who are less friendly to President Trump would maybe not be as interested in taking on this mission." London CNN —Weight loss drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic have been hailed worldwide as revolutionary for medicine. Additional measures to prevent obesity in the first place are desperately needed, health experts say. Part of that new thinking is exploring weight loss drugs. After Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s dramatic performance with Latino voters, a coalition of Democratic-leaning Latino groups is grappling with the shift and trying to reconcile it with the policies they say many Hispanics support. Along with UnidosUS, Latino-focused advocacy groups such as Voto Latino, Somos Votantes, Hispanic Federation and La Brega y Fuerza Fund sponsored a poll of Latino voters. The coalition rejected national exit poll findings showing that Trump won the majority of Latino men — 55% — to Harris’ 43%. Thirty-seven percent of male participants in exit polling identified as white, while 6% identified as Latino in the Latino groups’ poll.

The researchers found that reducing sugar consumption in this window decreased the type 2 diabetes risk by about 35% and the risk of high blood pressure by roughly 20%. The research team looked at data from before and after the end of the United Kingdom’s World War II-era sugar rationing in September 1953. When the rationing of sugar and sweets ended in September 1953, the average adult’s daily sugar consumption in the UK nearly doubled almost immediately, from about 40 grams to 80 grams. Corkins says one way for parents to reduce sugar consumption in young children is to change their own habits. The key is practicing moderation when consuming sugary foods.

Cans of Dr Pepper soda are displayed on June 3, 2024 in San Anselmo, California. While consumers are drinking more Coke, Coke Zero, Dr Pepper and Canada Dry, Pepsi’s soda sales are struggling. ‘Diet Coke Break’“Dirty soda,” a popular TikTok trend that combines soda with syrup and cream, has also driven interest in soda brands among younger consumers interested in creating their own soda concoctions. TikTok has also recently become filled with “Dirty Diet Coke,” “Crispy Diet Coke” and “DietCokeBreak” recipe videos where people leave cans of Diet Coke in the fridge for weeks and then pour them into a glass, sometimes with citrus powder, to get the most fizziness. Singer Dua Lipa gave Coke its latest viral hit this month when she posted a video sharing her Diet Coke recipe, which combines Diet Coke, pickle juice and jalapeño sauce.

New York CNN —“Mtn Dew” is getting a makeover, with the word “mountain” reappearing on cans and bottles following a roughly two-decade-long hiatus. “Mountain Dew appears ready to shake off the adrenaline rush that has defined the brand’s marketing for almost two decades, when a key strategy was to market Dew like an energy drink to an energy drink crowd,” Duane Stanford, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest, told CNN. A major change in marketing is essential for Mountain Dew. The new look for Mountain Dew is more about an “evolution and nurturing that we wanted to give to this beloved franchise,” said JP Bittencourt, vice president of marketing at Mountain Dew. “This design has been in the works for some time, so this is not a response to anybody.”A rebrand could also attract drinkers that have perhaps forgotten about Mountain Dew.

This is one of them: Drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee or tea a day may protect against Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke. They also looked at responses from about 172,000 people who specified that they drank caffeinated coffee or tea. None of them had a history of cardiometabolic disease — defined by a diagnosis of at least two of the three conditions: Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease or stroke — when the study began. And among those who did eventually develop cardiometabolic disease, drinking moderate amounts of coffee every day was still associated with lower risk of developing another cardiometabolic disease. Studies have also shown a link between high caffeine intake and a greater risk of dementia and stroke.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.
