The pay limit has been in place since the end of a labor dispute that caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 NHL season. Sports business experts said the strict salary cap has helped the league's financial health since the full season stoppage. The hard salary cap is a stark difference from Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, which have no salary cap and a soft salary cap, respectively. But the hard cap means NHL teams have to be especially diligent. The NHL is planning to start negotiations with the NHLPA in early 2025, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at this year's NHL Board of Governors meeting.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been suspended five games for cross-checking Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig in the final seconds of the teams' game over the weekend. The NHL's department of player safety announced the suspension Tuesday after a virtual hearing with Rielly and team and union representatives. LONDON, Ontario (AP) — Authorities scheduled a news conference for Monday to discuss a 2018 case that has led to sexual assault charges against four current NHL players and a former NHL player, all of whom were on Canada's world junior hockey team that year. McLeod is facing an additional charge of being a party to the offense of sexual assault. A woman sued Hockey Canada in 2022, alleging she was sexually assaulted in a hotel room by eight members of Canada’s world junior team after a fundraising gala in London in June 2018. Hockey Canada settled the lawsuit, and then an investigation revealed the organization had two secret slush funds to pay out settlements on claims of sexual assault and abuse. He said the NHL interviewed every player from that team, adding the woman involved declined to take part in the investigation.

The world's top hockey league will allow its players to participate in the Games in 2026 in Milan and in 2030 under an agreement announced Friday by the NHL, the NHL Players’ Association, International Ice Hockey Federation and the IOC. CNN —After missing the previous two Winter Games, National Hockey League players will return to the Olympics for the first time in more than a decade. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in an ESPN report on Wednesday that the league wants to prioritize protection but added that players have the right to make decisions for themselves. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which is the sport's governing body in England and Wales, said this week the safety of players must take precedence above all else and made neck guards mandatory from Jan. 1 for all on-ice activities. The EIHA did not make neck guards mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues but made a "strong recommendation" that players at all levels across English Ice Hockey start using a neck guard. On Tuesday, the league announced it would now allow players to use products like Pride Tape during practices, warm-ups and games. “After consultation with the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, Players will now have the option to voluntarily represent social causes with their stick tape throughout the season,” an NHL statement read. Dermott displayed a small amount of Pride Tape on the handle of his hockey stick on Saturday, becoming the first player to go against the ban. The NHL sent a memo to teams last week clarifying what players can and cannot do as part of theme celebrations this season, including a ban on the use of rainbow-colored stick tape for the Pride nights that have become a hot-button issue in hockey. The updated guidance reaffirms on-ice player uniforms and gear for warmups and official team practices cannot be altered to reflect theme nights, including Pride, Hockey Fights Cancer or military appreciation celebrations. Players can voluntarily participate in themed celebrations off the ice. The NHL decided in June not to allow teams to wear any theme jerseys for warmups after a handful of players opted out of those situations during Pride night last season. The league has said players opting out of Pride nights served as a distraction to the work its teams were doing in the community.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Golden Knights raised their Stanley Cup championship banner in the most Las Vegas way possible. Captain Mark Stone placed the Stanley Cup next to an oversized slot machine on the ice Tuesday night before the season opener against the Seattle Kraken and pulled the lever. Vegas’ championship banner resides next to one that memorializes the victims of the Route 91 Harvest festival shooting with 60 stars representing each victim who died from that tragedy. CNN —National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman said he has advised NHL teams to no longer wear specialty-themed jerseys during warm-ups, including Pride-theme jerseys. The decision follows Major League Baseball’s announcement last week that teams would not put Pride logos on players’ uniforms and after a handful of NHL players refused to wear Pride sweaters or participate in their teams’ Pride Nights due to their personal beliefs. Tempe voters rejected a referendum that may decide the future of Arizona's NHL team. The Arizona Coyotes, which are currently playing in a college arena, are grasping for answers. "We are very disappointed Tempe voters did not approve Propositions 301, 302, and 303. For the time being, the Coyotes have played in Arizona State's hockey arena, sharing space with the college team.
