Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Tuesday that it is stopping operations across the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and its wider metropolitan area due to an escalation in violence and threats to its staff from members of the Haitian police. The suspension would last from Wednesday “until further notice,” said MSF. A spokesperson for Haiti’s national police declined to comment. The medical aid group treats on average 1,100 outpatients, 54 children in emergency situations and more than 80 sexual and gender-based violence survivors each week, MSF said, as well as many burn victims. Garnier added that while MSF remained committed to the population it could only resume services if it receives guarantees of security and respect by armed groups, members of self-defense groups and law enforcement.

Doctors Without Borders, also known as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), accused authorities of repeatedly stopping its vehicles and threatening its staff with violence, including death and rape. MSF cited a deadly incident on November 11, when officers and vigilantes allegedly attacked one of its ambulances as it was transporting three wounded patients to an MSF hospital in Port-au-Prince. “This series of incidents have left us with no choice but to suspend our activities in Port-au-Prince,” MSF said in a statement. Brutal gang violence in the capital has resulted in the kidnappings of hundreds of people, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Haitians from their homes. Last week, US-based airlines suspended flights to Haiti after three of their jets were struck by bullets while flying over Port-au-Prince.

CNN —Two wounded patients were killed after police officers and vigilantes attacked an ambulance in Haiti, humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders said on Wednesday. The officers and vigilantes then took the three wounded patients outside the hospital grounds and at least two of them were killed, MSF said. The third patient was not killed, Garnier said. This is the latest deadly ambulance attack that MSF has reported in Haiti. In December last year, the organization said armed men stopped an MSF ambulance, dragged a patient out and killed him.

Reuters —Europe’s biggest meal delivery firm, Just Eat Takeaway, said on Wednesday it had struck a deal to sell its U.S. unit Grubhub to Wonder for $650 million, sending its shares soaring 20% in early trading. “Just Eat Takeaway is at last putting an end to its disastrous U.S. journey,” Bryan Garnier analyst Clement Genelot said, noting the group had destroyed more than $7 billion in shareholder value there. Grubhub’s enterprise value of $650 million includes $500 million of senior notes and $150 million cash, Wonder said in a statement. Just Eat CEO Jitse Groen had in February said the M&A environment was not easy in the U.S., where fee caps cost the group some $100 million per year. JPMorgan said in a note it had argued for an about $1.2 billion valuation for Grubhub in the past, but the market would view the long-awaited deal as positive even at a lower valuation.

Investigators searched the offices of U.S. streaming giant Netflix in France and the Netherlands Tuesday as part of a preliminary investigation into tax fraud and money laundering, a French judicial source close to the investigation told NBC News. Searches were being conducted simultaneously at the company's headquarters in Paris and Amsterdam by Dutch magistrates and investigators, accompanied by French magistrates and investigators. The French investigation, carried out by the PNF, a special financial crime prosecution unit notorious for pursuing high-stakes white-collar probes that often involve large international companies, was opened in November 2022. NBC News has reached out to Netflix in France for comment. A preliminary investigation in France does not imply criminal charges and does not necessarily lead to a trial.

What if All Dance Forms Were Considered Equal?

Under the gentle radiance of golden chandeliers stood dancers, rows and rows of them, gleaming onstage. The scene was like a painting steeped in mist, its width diffused by shards of light and fog, its depth seeming to reach into infinity. Within each body, you felt dance history. For this version of his dance “Apaches,” the choreographer Saïdo Lehlouh opened the Foyer de la Danse behind the stage at the Palais Garnier, the opera house that is a hallowed home for classical ballet. The foyer, a gilded salon where dancers warm up, is not a space the public usually sees.

Entry is via a lottery through the Paris Olympic Games app.

Kenny criticized Red Lobster employees at meetings and made derogatory comments about them, according to former Red Lobster leaders who worked closely with Kenny. Red Lobster’s annual customer count has dropped by 30% since 2019, Red Lobster said in its bankruptcy filing. Red Lobster employees say they were pressured by Thai Union representatives to buy more seafood from Thai Union. The court ruled unanimously that officials can be deemed "state actors" when making use of social media and can therefore face litigation if they block or mute a member of the public. The court held that conduct on social media can be viewed as a state action when the official in question "possessed actual authority to speak on the state's behalf" and "purported to exercise that authority." While the officials in both cases have low profiles, the ruling will apply to all public officials who use social media to engage with the public. The cases raised the question of whether public officials' posts and other social media activity constitute part of their governmental functions. The court is wrestling with a whole series of social media-related free speech issues in its current term, which runs until June.

Red Lobster introduced a $20 all-you-can eat shrimp promotion that backfired. They're clearly seeking value, a Red Lobster exec said. AdvertisementTheir generosity backfired, as the chain underestimated the number of diners hunting for dining deals amid rising menu prices. Though inflation is slowing, menu prices remain on the uptick, according to new federal data released in November. Ultimately, $20 for endless shrimp was too cheap for Red Lobster.

Business tends to slow down at Red Lobster locations during the third and fourth quarters, so its parent company, Thai Union, launched a new promotion. Zalando packaging from an online delivery is seen discarded in a cardboard box in Galway, Ireland, August 27, 2020. Zalando now expects 2023 revenue to fall between 0.5% and 3%, having previously guided to a 1% decline at worst. An unusually warm September weighed on sales of autumn and winter clothes, Zalando said, exacerbating the impact of weak consumer sentiment. Gross merchandise volume - a measure of sales on the platform by Zalando and partner brands - fell by 2.4% from a year ago. The company's market value has dropped over the past two years as shoppers, freed from pandemic restrictions, returned to stores and ordered fewer clothes online.

Blocking users is a function often employed on social media to stifle critics. The justices, hearing about three hours of arguments, focused on spelling out the circumstances for deciding whether public officials were acting in their personal capacity when blocking critics or engaged in a "state action." Conservative Justice Samuel Alito cited a hypothetical town manager who puts a municipal seal on his own social media page and tells citizens to express their views. Under this test, Mooppan argued, the social media activity of his clients was not governmental. Some justices asked whether requiring public officials to include disclaimers on their personal pages making clear their social media activity is not governmental would help disentangle their private and public capacities.

The Authority of Law statue is seen outside the U.S. Supreme Court at the start of the new term in Washington, U.S., October 2, 2023. The Supreme Court is tasked with deciding whether the public officials engaged in a "state action" in blocking critics from social media accounts or were merely acting in their personal capacity. The justices also are due to decide other important cases involving speech on social media during their current nine-month term. One involves a challenge to Republican-backed state laws limiting the ability of social media platforms to remove or moderate content deemed objectionable or misinformation. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed, ruling that Zane and O'Connor-Ratcliff had presented their social media accounts as "channels of communication with the public" about school board business.
