☆ ‘Oversight After Dark’: Lawmakers Hurl Insults at Hearing

Even by the rock-bottom standards of the 118th Congress, Thursday night’s three-hour voting session of the House Oversight Committee was perhaps a new low. The members of the Republican-led committee gathered after 8 p.m. in a Capitol Hill hearing room ready for a fight — some members of the audience were even said to have brought alcoholic beverages to enjoy the show. Back in Washington, lawmakers were ostensibly meeting for the most serious and somber of reasons: to debate whether to hold a cabinet official in contempt of Congress. Who better to instigate the chaos than Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, the right-wing Georgia Republican best known for her penchant for incendiary statements and stunts? Her first target was Representative Jasmine Crockett, the Democrat from Texas who frequently takes on Ms. Greene in the committee.

John Durham, the Trump-era special counsel who for four years has pursued a politically fraught investigation into the Russia inquiry, accused the F.B.I. of a “lack of analytical rigor” in a final report made public on Monday that examined the bureau’s investigation into whether the 2016 Trump campaign was conspiring with Moscow. Mr. Durham’s 306-page report appeared to show little substantial new information about the F.B.I.’s handling of the Russia investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane, and it failed to produce the kinds of blockbuster revelations impugning the bureau that former President Donald J. Trump and his allies had once suggested that Mr. Durham would find. Instead, the report — released without substantive comment or redactions by Attorney General Merrick B. Garland — repeated previously exposed flaws in the inquiry, including from a 2019 inspector general report, while concluding that the F.B.I. suffered from a confirmation bias as it pursued leads about Mr. Trump’s ties to Russia.

A federal immigration judge's former staffer accused him of sexual harassment in a shocking lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges LA judge Scott Laurent ranked female colleagues and lawyers by which ones were "fuckable." Esocoto also alleged Laurent ranked female colleagues, judges, and lawyers by which ones he deemed were "fuckable." Escoto also alleges Laurent often asked her to come "sit on Daddy's lap," referring to himself as "Daddy." The lawsuit alleges Garland then "acted on Judge Laurent's recommendation to fire" Escoto "shortly after receiving" her "complaints of sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation."
