J-Hope, K-pop star and member of the supergroup BTS, was discharged from South Korea's military on Thursday after completing the country's mandatory military service requirement. Jin, the oldest member of BTS, finished his military service in June, and presented J-Hope with a bouquet of flowers. South Korea mandates all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 serve 18 to 21 months in the military or equivalent civilian service. Exceptionally talented athletes and artists can sometimes be exempted from military service. A third BTS member, Suga, began his military service in September 2023.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —North Korea has adopted a new strategy to contend with its southern neighbor: sending floating bags of trash containing “filth” across the border, carried by massive balloons. South Korean authorities said the balloons, which landed in several locations, were filled with "filth and garbage." “All responsibility arising from the North Korean balloons lies entirely with North Korea, and we sternly warn North Korea to immediately stop its inhumane and low-level actions.”Local governments also sent messages to residents in the northern Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces to warn of the “unidentified objects,” and advised against outdoor activities. Earlier this year a South Korean research group has released rare footage that it claimed showed North Korean teenagers sentenced to hard labor for watching and distributing K-dramas. But the situation in North Korea deteriorated in the following years and diplomatic talks fell apart – prompting strict rules to snap back into place in the North.

SEOUL, July 11 (Reuters) - North Korea's Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un, on Tuesday accused a U.S. military spy plane of entering the country's Exclusive Economic Zone eight times, state media KCNA reported. The Pentagon earlier brushed aside Pyongyang's accusations of airspace violations and said the U.S. military had adhered to international law. "So those accusations are just accusations," Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh told reporters. A country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) - which extends 200 nautical miles from the 12 nautical-mile territorial zone around the coast - is a right to exploit marine resources within but does not confer sovereignty over the water's surface or the airspace above it. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller urged North Korea "to refrain from escalatory actions" and reiterated a call for it "to engage in serious and sustained diplomacy" when asked about the North Korean statements at a regular news briefing on Monday.

SEOUL, Oct 28 (Reuters) - North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) off its east coast on Friday, South Korea's military said, while wrapping up nearly two weeks of major drills aimed at deterring its neighbour. The launch, at a time of growing fears that North Korea is readying for its first nuclear test since 2017, was the latest in a record year of tests, whether of short-range missiles, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), or others. The launches did not pose an immediate threat to the United States or its allies, the U.S. military's Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement. South Korea and the United States say the exercises are defensive and needed to counter the North's threats. North Korea held six nuclear tests there from 2006 to 2017.
