Following their 1-0 victory of the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference Final, the LA Galaxy locker room was full of tears and silence. For a record-setting sixth time in their 29-year history, the LA Galaxy are champions of Major League Soccer. Red Bulls defender Sean Nealis cut the deficit in half with a beautiful volley inside the box in the 28th minute. The Red Bulls had rallied from a one-goal deficit in the playoffs before. However, in all their other MLS Cup Playoff matches, the Red Bulls scored first and relied on their durable defense to hold steady.

For mainstream Americans, Red Bull is a drink consumed at parties and nightclubs. The Serbian dribbled untouched into the Red Bull penalty area and finished with his weak foot past New York goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. In the U.S., the former Metrostars are a Red Bull brand that’s still searching for an identity. “I came here to… bring the Red Bulls back to something special,” he said. New York was in an MLS Cup final again, but so many questions remain about the longevity of their success.

CNN —Despite its name, June’s full moon will not look like a strawberry. But the bright orb could still turn heads Friday night with an appearance that is bigger and more colorful than the average moon. Since a full moon is opposite the sun, this strawberry moon will shine lower in the sky than usual, according to NASA. CNN —Astronomers are witnessing a never-before-seen spectacle in the cosmos: the awakening of a supermassive black hole at the center of a distant galaxy. In late 2019, a team of astronomers took notice of an otherwise unremarkable galaxy named SDSS1335+0728, 300 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation. “If so, this would be the first time that we see the activation of a massive black hole in real time.”Sleeping celestial giantsSupermassive black holes are classified as having masses more than 100,000 times that of our sun. “In the case of SDSS1335+0728, we were able to observe the awakening of the massive black hole, (which) suddenly started to feast on gas available in its surroundings, becoming very bright.”Previous research has pointed to inactive galaxies that appeared to become active after several years, which is usually triggered by black hole activity, but the process of a black hole awakening has never been directly observed before, until now, Hernández García said. The same scenario may play out with Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, but astronomers aren’t sure how likely it is to occur, Ricci said.

How primordial black holes could explain dark matter

The late physicist Stephen Hawking hypothesized that dark matter could be hiding in black holes formed during the big bang. “We were making use of Stephen Hawking’s famous calculations about black holes, especially his important result about the radiation that black holes emit,” Kaiser said. This is not to say dark matter is not a particle, or that it’s for sure black holes. “The next generation of gravitational detectors could catch a glimpse of the small-mass black holes — an exotic state of matter that was an unexpected byproduct of the more mundane black holes that could explain dark matter today.”Many forms of dark matterWhat does this mean for the ongoing experiments that are trying to detect dark matter, such as the LZ Dark Matter Experiment in South Dakota? And those indeed might pick up some of the stray signals from the very violent formation process of primordial black holes.”There’s also the possibility that primordial black holes are just a fraction of the dark matter, Alonso-Monsalve added.

CNN —A decade-long survey of the night sky has revealed a mysterious new type of star astronomers are referring to as an “old smoker.”These previously hidden stellar objects are aging, giant stars located near the heart of the Milky Way galaxy. This illustration shows an eruption occurring in the swirling disk of matter around a newborn star. They help the newborn star in the middle to grow, but make it harder for planets to form. Infrared images show a red giant star, located 30,000 light years away near the center of the Milky Way. Understanding how the old smokers release elements into space could change the way astronomers think about the way such elements are distributed across the universe.

The researchers confirmed that the black hole is spinning, which causes what is known as the Lense-Thirring effect. “But if you have a rapidly rotating black hole, the space-time around it is not symmetric — the spinning black hole is dragging all of the space-time around with it … it squishes down the space-time, and it sort of looks like a football,” she said. Black holes and galactic historyKnowing the mass and the spin of a black hole helps astronomers understand how the black hole might have formed and evolved, Daly said. However, a black hole that was made with accretion of surrounding gas would see a high spin value. “The question of whether our central galactic black hole rotates or not, or how fast it rotates, is quite important,” Stojkovic said in an email.

CNN —The James Webb Space Telescope has looked into the heart of the Milky Way galaxy, unveiling new features and mysteries within the chaotic region that could help astronomers unravel more details about the early universe. Astronomers used Webb to glimpse Sagittarius C, or Sgr C, an active region of star formation located about 300 light-years from the galaxy’s central supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. A light-year, equivalent to 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometers), is how far a beam of light travels in one year. Astronomers are still trying to determine what has created the vast amount of energized gas, which surpasses what would normally be released by young massive stars. “Webb has provided us with a ton of data on this extreme environment, and we are just starting to dig into it.”

CNN —Astronomers have spied an intriguing phenomenon in the distant universe — a galaxy that closely resembles the Milky Way — and it’s challenging key theories on how galaxies evolve. Like our home galaxy, the newly discovered ceers-2112 is a barred spiral galaxy, and it’s now the most distant of its kind ever observed. While massive spiral galaxies are common in the Milky Way’s cosmic neighborhood, that hasn’t always been the case. The bars take shape when stars within spiral galaxies rotate in an orderly fashion, as they do in the Milky Way. “The discovery of ceers-2112 paves the way for more bars to be discovered in the young universe,” de la Vega said.

Structures newly discovered in the Milky Way

CNN —An international team of astrophysicists has discovered hundreds of mysterious structures in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. Sagittarius A* “is the closest supermassive black hole to us, but it’s relatively quiet and therefore somewhat difficult to really study,” Hamden added. The vertical filaments surround the nucleus of the Milky Way, but the horizontal ones appear to spread out to one side toward the black hole. The vertical filaments, on the other hand, are magnetic and hold cosmic ray electrons moving nearly as fast as the speed of light. “One way to confirm that the (filament) structure is created by something like a jet is to find both sides of it.”This would add “to the complex, active picture of our own Milky Way,” she said.
