CNN —A Scottish woman accused of stalking “Baby Reindeer” creator and star Richard Gadd can proceed with her defamation lawsuit against Netflix, after a federal judge in California refused to dismiss all of the claims. In a ruling published on Friday, Judge R. Gary Klausner wrote that while Fiona Harvey’s “purported actions are reprehensible,” the differences in how the show depicted these “could produce a different effect on the mind of a viewer.”Richard Gadd created and starred in "Baby Reindeer." The show topped most-watched lists worldwide after its debut in April, generating headlines and speculation about the characters and who inspired them. “Baby Reindeer” has topped most-watched lists worldwide since its debut in April, generating headlines and speculation about the characters and who inspired them. Her complaint lists Netflix and Netflix Worldwide Entertainment as defendants. The document alleges that the defendants and Gadd told the “biggest lie in television history” by claiming the story is true. In “Baby Reindeer,” Gadd’s stalker is portrayed as unattractive and mentally ill — someone whom her victim actually feels sorry for. “Baby Reindeer,” rated TV-MA by Netflix for “language, nudity, sex, sexual violence, substances,” only has a viewer discretionary warning before “Episode 4” wherein Gadd’s character is sexually assaulted. Information is also available on sexual assault, sexual violence and relationship abuse. Neither Netflix nor the “You” and “Baby Reindeer” teams responded to CNN’s requests for comment. Fleitman hopes “Baby Reindeer” can raise awareness for stalking victims, like men and so-called “imperfect victims” whose stories may not look like the ones we’re used to seeing.

This article includes spoilers for all of “Baby Reindeer.”The mini-series “Baby Reindeer” arrived on Netflix on April 11 without much advance hype, but it quickly became one of the most talked-about TV shows of 2024. It’s not hard to understand why. By the end of that first episode, Martha’s neediness has begun to shade into creepiness. What makes “Baby Reindeer” so effective is that as Martha pushes further and further into Donny’s personal life — attending his comedy shows, befriending his landlady, calling his parents — the audience shares his mounting feelings of powerlessness and frustration, cut with flashes of pity for the woman who is ruining his life. The show has the “slow-motion train wreck” appeal of a twisty true-crime documentary, but balanced with empathy for two profoundly broken people.
