"QAnon Shaman" Jacob Chansley will regain possession of the makeshift spear and horned helmet that he carried as he stormed the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot with other Trump supporters, a federal judge ruled Monday. "Since the government has not established that it still needs these items as evidence and has not sought their forfeiture, the Court will GRANT Mr. Chansley's motion," Lamberth wrote. The DOJ last month said it wanted to hold on to Chansley's property, because despite having expressed remorse at his criminal sentencing, he has since challenged his conviction and sentence. "Even if the government may need to reprove Mr. Chansley's guilt, the government has not explained why it would need his property," the judge wrote in Monday's order. "He was like thousands of others that day," Lamberth wrote in Monday's order.

The prospect of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. threatening to upend the presidential race went from an idea to a reality in one of the country’s most consequential battlegrounds on Thursday, when Mr. Kennedy qualified for the ballot in Michigan. The decision by the Natural Law Party to grant Mr. Kennedy its ballot line in November ensures he will be a factor in a pivotal swing state where the presidential election is expected to be incredibly close and where President Biden has already shown vulnerability with key Democratic constituencies. During Michigan’s primary in February, a protest movement over Mr. Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza drew significant support. Mr. Kennedy, a lifelong Democrat and the scion of perhaps the nation’s most famous Democratic family, is running as an independent in 2024 and polling higher in early surveys than any third-party candidate since Ross Perot, the self-funding billionaire who ran in the 1990s. His independent candidacy has earned him the estrangement of his own family — who campaigned this week with Mr. Biden in Pennsylvania — and many of his previous colleagues from the environmental movement, who denounced his candidacy publicly on Friday.

House Republicans have elected two nominees for the job since a hard-right clutch of lawmakers toppled Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The second failed effort on Wednesday by Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio to be elected House speaker added momentum to an idea that has been floated by lawmakers in both parties in recent days: Give Representative Patrick T. McHenry, the interim speaker, explicit power to conduct legislative business. Mr. McHenry is acting as temporary speaker under rules adopted after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that require the speaker of the House to come up with a list of people to fill the post in the event that it becomes vacant. When former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was booted out by a right-wing rebellion two weeks ago, the world learned that Mr. McHenry’s was the first name on his list. Many House aides believe that Mr. McHenry’s power is strictly confined to presiding over the election of a new speaker, as he has been doing this week. And as the turmoil around replacing Mr. McCarthy has continued, some members in both parties have been quietly discussing a way to explicitly grant Mr. McHenry permission to step in with full — or at least expanded — authority to run the House.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanded that U.S. officials gain immediate access to Evan Gershkovich , as Russian officials continue to refuse him consular access more than two weeks after they arrested him on an espionage allegation. Mr. Blinken called on Moscow to grant Mr. Gershkovich, a 31-year-old American and reporter for The Wall Street Journal, a basic right that is afforded to foreign prisoners under international obligations.
