GLAAD, the LGBTQ media advocacy organization, has released its 12th annual Studio Responsibility Index tracking films released during 2023. Despite “a huge increase in LGBTQ characters who were front and center in their own narratives,” the study found the number of films with LGBTQ characters dropped in 2023. The survey looked at 256 films from 10 major distributors and their subsidiaries and streaming services. Those 70 films included 170 LGBTQ characters, of which 46% were characters of color, representing an increase of 6% from the 2022 study. If LGBTQ representation continues to decline in major releases, these companies will lose relevance with a crucial buying audience.

Twitter is a more dangerous social platform for LGBTQ users now than it was a year ago, according to a new survey from LGBTQ+ rights organization GLAAD. GLAAD found that the platforms continue to fall short at establishing and enforcing safeguards meant to protect LGBTQ users from hate speech. "You can think of community notes as like an error correction on information in the network. And the effect of community notes is actually bigger than it would seem. The debate over a community notes approach is that it leaves the burden on those affected by hate speech to report harmful posts.

A clear majority of Americans who don't identify as LGBTQ+ believe companies should publicly support the community, according to a new survey from gay rights organization GLAAD. In April, Bud Light came under fire after partnering with transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The campaign prompted violent videos of customers shooting cans of Bud Light and a right-wing boycott. In response, the marketing executive who oversaw the partnership at Bud Light parent company Anheuser-Busch Inbev took a leave of absence. Sales of Bud Light since then continue to suffer, according to data by Evercore ISI.

American workers and consumers are more likely to prefer brands that publicly align with LGBTQ causes, according to a new analysis. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation partnered with Edelman to analyze the survey data to gather LGBTQ-specific insights. The survey responses came from 1,000 consumers and 1,000 workers in the U.S. It found that young shoppers especially tend to find brands that pledge support to LGBTQ communities more "relevant" and "relatable." Soon after, then-CEO Bob Chapek announced that the company would donate $5 million to LGBTQ support organizations and vowed to help repeal Florida's anti-LGBTQ policies.
