Donald Trump's election victory is set to make the Federal Reserve's job more difficult. His tariff and immigration plans are expected to stoke inflation, complicating the Fed's policy decisions. Trump has also said he'd like a say in setting monetary policy, which would erode Fed independence. Donald Trump's election win brings his vision of hefty trade tariffs and a sweeping immigration crackdown closer to becoming reality. A study from the Peterson Institute of International Economics said interfering with the Fed's independence could cost the economy $300 billion and drive inflation higher.

The U.S. economy added a whopping 254,000 jobs in September, nearly 100,000 more than economists expected. The unemployment rate, which was expected to hold steady at 4.2%, slipped to 4.1%. Wages also rose more than expected month over month. To be sure, the new data also has traders pricing a smaller quarter percentage point interest rate reduction at the central bank's November meeting. "Fed cuts should be slower and I continue to think (and the data supports it) that the current neutral rate is well above 3% (economy chugging along on 5% yields for over a year)," said Tchir.

AdvertisementThe September jobs report offered good news all around — except to those expecting a second straight jumbo 50-basis-point rate cut from the Federal Reserve next month. In addition, the unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 4.1%, bucking estimates that it would stay unchanged at 4.2%. Analysts agree that September's blowout job numbers make an aggressive interest rate cut harder to justify. Advertisement"Did the Fed even need to cut rates in September, let alone cut by 50 basis points?" Late last month, the bank predicted that investors would take on more risk if the unemployment rate hit 4.1% and if payrolls reached above 150,000.

Stocks struggled this week as rising tensions in the Middle East set off the strongest rally in oil prices since March 2023. "The stock market has been living up to October's reputation of increased volatility," said Glen Smith, chief investment officer at GDS Wealth Management. Inflation report, Fed minutes on deck In the week ahead, investors will keep an eye on a couple of potential catalysts. On Wednesday, investors will parse minutes from September's central bank gathering for insights into the future path of monetary policy. "I would say the inflation report is probably less important than it used to be," Dickson said.

Baupost's Seth Klarman found a slew of buying opportunities in the first quarter, including a handful of artificial intelligence-linked stocks, according to a new regulatory filing. The noted hedge fund investor added a sizable stake in web recommendation platform Outbrain last quarter, building a bet worth more than $100 million and making it his ninth largest position. Klarman also took a small bet in Soundhound AI , a voice AI and speech recognition company. And just like Buffett, Klarman has increased his exposure to the tech sector in recent years to take advantage of its explosive growth. In this case, Klarman significantly increased exposure to the group after prices got a lot cheaper.

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange shortly before the closing bell as the market takes a significant dip in New York, U.S., February 25, 2020. Remarkably, Nvidia managed to vault the sky-high bar for quarterly earnings, revenue and projections yet again in its latest update overnight. Bond volatility (.MOVE) has also fallen to two-month lows, while currency market 'vol' (.DBCVIX) is plumbing 20-month lows. CONCERN OVER HOME SALES, HOLIDAY SEASON SALESNews of a drop in U.S. existing home sales last month to a 13-year low was perhaps as important as the Fed minutes - as was warnings from more major U.S. retailers, this time Best Buy and Nordstrom, about sticky holiday season sales and the need for discounting. The dollar (.DXY) was a touch higher on Wednesday, meantime, with most overseas stock markets firmer too.

U.S.-listed shares of Enbridge fell 6.5% to $33.01 in extended trading after the company also announced a C$4 billion ($2.9 billion) bought-share sale to fund a portion of the deal. On first blush, that appears to be what Bain Capital (BCSF.N) is trying to do with Chinese data centre operator Chindata . But it’s a saga that’s starting to verge on the absurd. Bain took Chindata public on the Nasdaq in September 2020. Less than three years later, the U.S. leveraged buyout veteran offered $8 per American Depositary receipt, valuing the company at $2.9 billion. The company has yet to acknowledge the offer from China Merchants Capital.

The current buzz surrounding artificial intelligence is here to stay, creating plenty of trading opportunities as the technology grows, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Shawn Kim. However, the hype around generative AI may be justified and the technology feels genuinely exciting," Kim said in a note on Tuesday. Morgan Stanley anticipates that increased demand for computer power needed for AI training will lead to rapidly growing markets for graphics and central processing units. In the generative AI world, "the raw material is data; the user of that material is hyperscale data centers; the enabling workhorse is semiconductors," wrote Kim. GDS "has more balanced exposure to all internet companies," Kim said, adding that its "valuation is more reasonable."

State-owned China Southern Airlines and data centre company GDS Holdings are among the U.S.-listed Chinese companies for audit inspection in the Asian financial hub, two separate sources said. Reuters reported last month that U.S. regulators had picked a number of U.S.-listed Chinese companies including e-commerce majors Alibaba Group Holding Ltd (9988.HK) and JD.com Inc (9618.HK) for audit inspection. It was not clear whether the Chinese officials would be present for every step of the inspection process with PCAOB representatives. The onsite inspections by the PCAOB are being conducted in the Hong Kong offices of the selected Chinese companies' audit firms, said two of the sources.
