WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Humanitarian issues in Gaza will be a top priority for U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on his current trip to the region, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday. Blinken was en route to the Middle East in a trip that will include stops in Israel, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the West Bank this week. A top priority for Blinken on this trip will be to get humanitarian help for Gaza Palestinians who are in dire straits after months of military response from Israel to the deadly Oct. 7 attacks in Israel by Hamas. The United States believes it is vital to secure a deal to release the remaining hostages Hamas took during its attack, including American hostages, and an accompanying humanitarian pause, Sullivan said. At the hands of Hamas, the Jewish people have endured horrors not seen since the Holocaust. My father hated that Hamas had dominated the conversation and positioned itself as the face of Gaza worldwide. Like many people from Gaza, my father knew that if you spoke up against these tyrannical oppressors, you were swiftly dealt with. Among the hard right, many people are conflating Palestinians with Hamas to justify the flattening of Gaza. The truth is, Hamas is not Gaza, and Gaza is not Hamas.

The independent Commission of Inquiry, established by the Human Rights Council, the U.N. top human rights body, last year, plans five days of hearings which it says will be impartial and examine the allegations of both Israelis and Palestinians. A U.N. human rights office has previously dismissed allegations of bias and said Israel had not cooperated with the commission's work. Neither the hearings nor the U.N. Human Rights Council have any legal powers. Israel's ally the United States has criticised the U.N. Human Rights Council for what it has described as a "chronic bias" against Israel. The inquiry mandate includes alleged human rights abuses before and after that and seeks to investigate the root causes of the tensions.
