Breaking Dawn was one of two places that opened in the San Francisco Bay Area last spring emphasizing brunch. Asian American restaurants in other cities have also found that sweet and savory spot between breakfast and lunch. Jessica Nguyen, 28, who was finishing brunch at Breaking Dawn, says she’ll almost always choose Asian brunch over regular eggs or waffles. Within the last few decades, Asian and Asian American cuisine has become more popular through media and savvy foodies. She doesn’t see other restaurants with Asian brunch as rivals.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Netflix registered its third-consecutive quarter of accelerating subscriber growth in the final three months of 2023, closing out a comeback year that included a crackdown on viewers freeloading on the video-streaming service and a smattering of price hikes. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesThe rising tide of customers left Netflix with more than 260 million global subscribers at the end of 2023 — an annual increase of nearly 30 million subscribers. Last year’s performance was a stark contrast to 2022’s increase of 8.9 million subscribers — a lackluster showing that raised questions whether the video-streaming pioneer was losing steam amid stiffening competition for viewers. The revenue exceeded analysts' forecasts, while earnings per share missed analyst targets, partly because of a $239 million charge tied to its foreign debt. The company's shares rose nearly 7% in Tuesday's extended trading after its fourth-quarter numbers came out.

The $15.50 per month price for Netflix's most popular streaming option in the U.S. will remain unchanged, as will a $7 monthly plan that includes intermittent commercials. The increase left Netflix with about 247 million worldwide subscribers, well above the 243.8 million projected by analysts surveyed by FactSet Research. Netflix has picked up more than 16 million subscribers through the first nine months of the year, already eclipsing the 8.9 million subscribers that it added all of last year. The crackdown also has boosted Netflix’s in another way – current subscribers can share their accounts with someone living outside their households by paying higher monthly fees. The higher prices for Netflix's premium plans also seems likely to divert more subscribers into the ad-supported option.

Senator Tommy Tuberville for holding up some 200 Pentagon nominees over a Defense Department abortion policy. I don't remember it happening before, and I've been around," Biden said of the actions of Tuberville at a fundraiser for wealthy donors in California's Silicon Valley. The Alabama senator has called the policy a violation of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits using federal taxpayer funds for abortion services. Jean-Pierre said the senator's blockade on the nominees was hurting military families and risking "our military readiness by depriving our armed forces of leadership." The Alabama senator is blocking what is usually a speedy process to confirm Pentagon nominees.

Larry Ellison, Oracle's chairman and technology chief, speaks at the Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco on September 16, 2019. For years, the database software developer lagged behind tech rivals in building cloud technology that met the demands of the modern-day enterprise. The shares are up over 50% in 2023, which would mark the best year for shareholders since the dot-com boom of 1999. Oracle got its latest boost this week after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings and revenue, prompting nods of approval from analysts. On Oracle's earnings call this week, CEO Safra Catz took a minute to express gratitude to the company's customers and employees.

Netflix is cracking down on password sharing by charging $8 to add another user to your account. The charge applies to sharing a Netflix password with someone living outside of your household. To combat password sharing, Netflix said it will limit viewership of its programming to people living in the same household. At that time, management had little incentive to risk riling customers by reining in password sharing. Those passwords were funneled through Netflix's 232.5 million worldwide paying subscribers, who generated the bulk of the company's $32 billion in revenue last year.
You're late on your taxes. Now what?

Being late on your taxes isn’t ideal, but it happens. If you didn’t file for an extension, then it is too late to do that now, says Bell. Then there is the non-filing penalty, which is 5% of the unpaid taxes for every month late, up to 25%. But for those who are late in filing taxes, there really is only one path forward. “People have a lot of reasons for not filing taxes, and the main one is that they can’t pay,” says Bell.
Netflix Will End Its DVD Service After 25 Years
  + stars: | 2023-04-18 | by ( Nicole Sperling | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
After 25 years, Netflix is ending its DVD-by-mail business. Before it was upending the entertainment industry and ushering in the streaming era, Netflix was a company whose business model revolved around sending DVDs through the mail in easily recognizable red-and-white envelopes. At its peak, in 2010, roughly 20 million subscribed to the DVD service. But the practice has long felt anachronistic, and the company said on Tuesday that it will ship its final DVDs to customers on Sept. 29. “To everyone who ever added a DVD to their queue or waited by the mailbox for a red envelope to arrive: thank you.”

Netflix's elevation of Greg Peters to co-CEO shows the importance of its advertising sales effort. But Bela Bajaria's rise to content chief has caused some confusion about the future of the TV and film organization. The Netflix veteran now shares the role with current co-CEO Ted Sarandos, as company cofounder Reed Hastings steps down and settles into an executive chairman position. The move made a lot of sense to industry insiders, and even publicly, Netflix had been signaling the ascension for some time. Netflix insiders said Bajaria's new title underscored the importance of TV versus film in the streaming wars.
Netflix is looking for a new flight attendant to join its "dream crew," and it's willing to pay over a quarter million dollars for the right candidate. The streaming giant is hiring a primary flight attendant for one of its super midsize private jets based out of San Jose, Calif. near the company's Los Gatos headquarters. In addition to normal responsibilities such as performing pre-flight cabin inspections and conducting safety briefings, the new attendant will be responsible for maintaining the stockroom, according to the job listing. The flight attendant will also be required to work flights on a Gulfstream G550 jet as needed. Candidates are expected to be able to help Netflix Aviation provide "confidential air transportation" and should be able to perform their jobs with "discretion," the company says.
Take steps to reduce your 2022 tax billWhile many tax planning opportunities vanish after year-end, experts say there are still a few ways to trim your 2022 tax bill. I believe there is tremendous value in thinking ahead and coordinating both your tax and financial planning strategies. You can also still make individual retirement account contributions until the tax-filing deadline on April 18, 2023, said Brown, who is also a CPA. "If you have not already done so, review last year's records and create a checklist of the forms" you're expecting, he suggested. For deductions, you may have 1098 for mortgage interest, 5498 for individual retirement account deposits, 5498-SA for health savings account contributions and more.
"It's definitely been not the most exciting and robust year," said one TV agent at a major agency. Around 70 people at HBO and HBO Max have been let go this year, and their comedy development teams have merged. While WBD doesn't break out streamer-specific figures, it said on Thursday's earnings call that HBO Max, HBO, and Discovery+ have a combined 94.9 million subscribers, ensuring that any show on HBO Max has the chance to get a lot of eyeballs. They'll also take smaller swings in the genre department, do things at a lower budget," said the second TV agent. Echoed the first TV agent: "You pitch and sell to them if no one else wants it."

Netflix Inc. is rolling out an ad-supported tier of service in a dozen countries as it continues talks with major studios, capping a seven-month sprint between the streaming giant’s announcement about entering the ad business and the product’s debut. The Los Gatos, Calif., company has so far secured big-name advertisers for its initial launch and hired new senior ad industry executives to help develop its business, but it continues to haggle with several major studios for the right to run ads against their content in the new service or put their content on the ad tier, according to people familiar with the matter. The service is scheduled to launch Thursday in the U.S.
