Analysts at major Wall Street banks are getting more cautious on chip darling ASML , raising concerns about the critical chip equipment maker's demand outlook. Earlier this week, investment bank UBS downgraded ASML to "neutral" and cut its price target on the stock to 900 euros ($1,000.78) from 1,050 euros previously. Other Wall Street banks have subsequently come out with their own respective analyses on ASML — and they're more downbeat than they were before. The bank remains bullish on the stock, though, keeping ASML in its top pick for EU semiconductor equipment stocks. UBS cautioned ASML's machines could face a slowdown in demand due to an "architecture shift" to gate all around architecture, or GAA.

Critical chip equipment supplier ASML is set to face softer demand from buyers of its products in the coming years — and the artificial intelligence boom won't be enough to offset these downside risks, according to analysts at investment bank UBS . Such memory chip makers include Samsung and Nvidia supplier SK Hynix. ASML is behind a key technology involved in chip manufacturing known as EUV, or extreme ultraviolet radiation. DRAM is a type of memory chip that's needed for a computer to function. Shares of the company were down more than 6% Wednesday, alongside a raft of other chip stocks , following a deep slide in Nvidia shares Tuesday .

Samsung unveils plan to speed up delivery of AI chips
  + stars: | 2024-06-12 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Samsung expects global chip industry revenue to grow to $778 billion by 2028, boosted by AI chips, Choi said. Samsung is one of the few companies that sells memory chips, offers foundry services and designs chips under the same roof. GAA is seen as important to keep making more powerful chips for AI as chips become finer to the point of pushing the boundaries of physics. Although competitors such as global foundry No 1 TSMC are also working on chips using GAA, Samsung started applying GAA earlier, and said it plans to mass produce its second-generation 3-nanometer chips using GAA in the second half of this year. Samsung also announced its latest 2-nanometer chipmaking process for high-performance computing chips, which places power rails on the backside of the wafer to improve power delivery.

The U.S. could further tighten restrictions on China's access to chip technology critical for artificial intelligence, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. The Biden administration is weighing actions that would target high-tech chip architecture known as gate all-around, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. GAA refers to new transistor architecture that could lead to better performance and lower power consumption. South Korea's Samsung Electronics has already started production for 3-nanometer chips with GAA technology. Shares of TSMC and Samsung Electronics were up 1.6% and 0.4%, respectively, in Wednesday morning trading in Asia.

November 21 - The Florida Panthers, who will go for their third straight win when they play host to the Boston Bruins Wednesday night, are getting an unexpected contribution from defenseman Niko Mikkola. July 1, the Panthers signed Mikkola to a three-year, $7.8 million contract. Indeed, in just 18 games this season, Mikkola - who made his NHL debut in January 2020 - has already matched his career high with three goals. The Bruins led that series 3-1 before Florida won the next two and then took Game 7 in overtime. That game was atypical for Boston as the Bruins have allowed more than two goals just four times this season -- all losses.

November 21 - Just when it seemed as if the Edmonton Oilers finally had found a rhythm, they might be amid another slide. However, the Oilers again are headed in the wrong direction after allowing 11 goals in consecutive road defeats to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers. On Monday, the Oilers squandered leads of 2-0 and 3-2 en route to a 5-3 loss to the Panthers. Jarvis has seven goals this season after totaling 31 over his first two seasons. Meanwhile, teammate Leon Draisaitl has seven goals and 10 assists in 14 contests against the Hurricanes.

A "monumental shift" is underway in the semiconductor industry — and a raft of stocks are set to benefit, according to analysts at Morgan Stanley . "The transition to 3D 'gate-all-around' architecture marks a monumental shift for leading-edge logic chip architectures," the analysts said. Though industry players expect that initial gains will be "relatively subdued," Morgan Stanley is optimistic that the shift will create a "roadmap into the next decade." Stock picks Here are some of the stocks Morgan Stanley expects will benefit: Lam Research is one of the stocks the bank rated overweight. Morgan Stanley analysts agreed with the company's statement that "gate-all-around is good for the industry, [so] good for ASML."
