Lego sales increase while other toy makers struggle

While other toy companies struggle with an inflation-fueled sales slump, Lego is building positive results brick by brick. Meanwhile, publicly traded rivals such as Mattel , Hasbro , Funko and Jakks Pacific have all reported double-digit revenue and sales declines so far this year. "I think what makes me very satisfied is this fact that we continue to outgrow the industry," CEO Niels Christiansen told CNBC. Toy companies across the industry saw massive gains during the Covid-19 pandemic, as parents looked for ways to keep their kids occupied during lockdowns. The region is newly exposed to the iconic building bricks and physical locations have helped show adults and children how to play with Lego.

Executives at Walmart (WMT.N), the largest U.S. importer of containerized goods, say they have made progress clearing unsold goods. Nevertheless, they remain cautious about consumer spending as inflation gobbles up money otherwise spent on goods, and recession and other "unknowns" threaten. Meanwhile, importers are selling products for pennies on the dollar to liquidators or offering steep discounts in customer email blasts. The Port of Los Angeles handled 331,811 20-foot (6-meter)equivalent units (TEU) of goods in February, a 36% year-over-year drop led by plummeting imports. "How much (improvement) remains to be seen," said Seroka, who added that ongoing West Coast port labor talks are also weighing on results.
New York CNN —Thirty million dollars worth of Funko (FNKO) Pop! figures – those big-headed, vinyl pop-culture dolls – will soon make their way into the hands of a new collector: The garbage collector. Funko said in its fourth quarter earnings report that a combination of waning demand for the toys and a surplus of inventory is creating financial trouble for the company. Funko was holding onto about $246.4 million worth of dolls at the end of 2022. The company reported a total loss of $47 million in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Funko will throw away $30 million worth of its plastic figurines, the company said this week. The move comes after Funko Pop inventory ballooned nearly 50% in the last year. According to the company, by the end of 2022 its inventory was valued at $246.4 million, an increase of 48% from the same period last year. The way forward, according to the company, is to throw away much of that inventory, as its button-eyed dolls clutter warehouses and store shelves. Still, Funko executives said the company is working hard to course correct and keep its brand top-of-mind for consumers across the globe.

Goldman Sachs thinks it's time to dump Funko 's stock as the toymaker has little room for error to execute its long-term growth plans. Analyst Stephen Laszczyk downgraded the stock to sell from neutral and set his price target to $8.50, presenting a 30% downside from Tuesday's close. Laszczyk added that other headwinds for Funko include continued pressure on its margins stemming from the company's limited execution on direct-to-consumer retail and international expansion. Funko shares have rallied 10.9% this year, though they are down 31.5% in the past 12 months. Laszczyk also downgraded Hasbro to neutral from buy, noting there's upside for the company, but not until it deleverages its balance sheet.
'Kidults' age 12 and above are comprising a growing sector of the toy industry, according to NPD Group. Today, Lego now sells 100 adult Lego sets, according to the Associated Press, including a replica of Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night and a functional roller coaster. "We make LEGO sets specifically for adults with more detail, challenging building techniques, and cool ways to display."
It’s an important moment for the toy industry, too, with the holiday season upon us. “The definition of adulthood has definitely evolved,” said Jeremy Padawer, chief brand officer at toy company Jazwares. Toy companies have even begun creating their own television and movie content in order to support toy lines. Still, the stakes remain high for the toy industry as it heads into the final weeks of the year. “Right now, adult toy buyers are the reason for growth in the toy business,” Larian said.
