That may begin to change as the archipelago’s first scheduled international passenger flight — from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to the islands’ capital of Port Blair — launched in late 2024. About 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) east of the famous capital city, Mendoza glories in its own deserved reputation as a paraíso del vino.

Barcelona, which has an estimated 20,000 Airbnb listings, has said it will ban all short-term rentals by 2028. New York enacted a law in 2023 that wiped nearly all short-term rentals off the map. When Airbnb was new and growing rapidly in the 2010s, there was little regulation on short-term rentals. For one, the country's strict travel regulations around COVID-19 lasted longer than measures taken by most other nations, which created a drag on travel bookings. Bianca Tavolari, a researcher and member of the advisory board of the Global Observatory of Short-Term Rentals, a group of Latin American organizations focused on housing, says Brazil has lagged in regulating short-term rentals, though a court ruled last year that hosts must have explicit consent from property owners to list apartments or condos as short-term rentals.

It's called the Brain Care Score. "For example, treating high blood pressure is one of the best ways to prevent both stroke and dementia," Mass General's Brain Care Score overview states. Are you getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, or 75 minutes of high intensity physical activity per week? A higher Brain Care Score is associated with a lower risk of dementia, depression and stroke, according to a study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry. Last month, a paper printed in the medical journal Neurology supported the associations between a high Brain Care Score and a lower risk of developing brain diseases.

Their incidences of cardiovascular disease –– including strokes, heart attacks and heart failures–– were collected from the national health registers through 2019, according to the study. Researchers looked at sugar consumption in three categories: sugary beverages, sweets like pastries, and toppings like honey or sugar added to tea or coffee, according to the study. “Different sources of added sugars also vary in their consumption patterns, which could further explain why they associate differently with cardiovascular disease risk,” Janzi added. Less sugar via less sodaThe study suggests that you don’t need to cut out all sugar to prevent cardiovascular disease, Janzi said. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons of added sugar a day for women and 9 for men.

CNN —Two golf governing bodies – the LPGA and the USGA – announced new guidelines Wednesday requiring golfers to be female at birth or to have transitioned pre-puberty to be eligible to compete in women’s events. Athletes assigned female at birth are eligible to compete on the LPGA Tour, Epson Tour, Ladies European Tour and USGA championships and team events. Meanwhile, players assigned male at birth and who have gone through male puberty are not eligible. “Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan in a press release. The USGA defines male puberty in the same terms as the LPGA.

It would be another 12 years before the NCAA made a major revision to its rules on transgender athletes. The Independent Council on Women’s Sports is financing a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA over its policy on transgender women athletes. Those pushing for acceptance of trans athletes in competitive sports argue there is no evidence showing transgender women have an advantage. But the rules of World Aquatics bar transgender athletes from competition unless they have not experienced biological puberty. And like cisgender athletes, trans athlete’s abilities vary.

Yet some adult lifestyle factors still appeared to be linked with improved cognitive performance and slower aging of the brain. “We are now looking into whether different constellations of brain ageing features are driven by particular subsets of risk factors.”As a researcher of the aging brain, Dr. Richard Isaacson said, the new paper spoke to him. There is a robust body of research on key differences in lifestyle that may contribute to differences in an aging brain. Adding a heart-healthy diet to your routine also can help slow brain aging and reduce dementia risk. “Those things may not exactly cause Alzheimer’s, but it can fast forward cognitive aging and fast forward cognitive decline.

But now the organization is turning its attention (and its rats’ noses) to the global illegal wildlife trade. “Unfortunately, organized crime knows there’s a real weak spot in detection methods of ports, seaports and airports, particularly in Africa.”Traffickers disguise wildlife products in a whole host of ways, he explains. This is particularly important given that much of the illicit wildlife trade comes from some of the world’s poorest regions. “I’m hopeful that (using rats) for detecting wildlife will be a low cost, low impact, low footprint operation,” says Allan. The illegal wildlife trade not only impacts populations of the trafficked animal or plant, it can have devastating knock-on consequences for whole ecosystems.

CNN —Scientists have scoured the depths of the ocean and outer space for microbes to help slow global warming. “Unusual colors, smells, textures, and other data” can help scientists identify areas of interest, Tierney said. The World Economic Forum named microbial carbon capture as one of the world’s top emerging technologies in a June report, but the technology is still in its infancy, with companies running pilot-scale programs to test commercial viability. Carbon capture — which includes a range of technology from huge vacuum-type facilities able to suck climate pollution from the air to carbon-absorbing sponges — remains controversial as a climate solution. “That’s why these technologies make sense in places where such energy is available in a sustainable manner.”The potential uses of extremophile microbes in biotech extend beyond carbon capture, according to Tierney.

Increasingly, Europe’s centrist figureheads are dropping their once-high-minded rhetoric on irregular migration, reaching instead for positions that were previously the preserve of the continent’s populist rabble-rousers. In Poland, like in much of Europe, “voters across the board expect that border security and migration controls are the priority,” Kucharczyk said. But Thursday’s victory for Tusk in Brussels underscores a broader, rightward shift across Europe on the issue of irregular migration. “It’s an existential issue for this coalition, and they don’t want to take chances on issues like migration,” Kucharczyk said. The wider question is whether the longstanding principles of the border-free Schengen Area can survive an enduring era of rising migration and populist subversion.

More younger women are getting breast cancer, and doctors are scrambling to understand why. While having a baby may temporarily increase a woman’s breast cancer risk, it slightly lowers long-term risk, said Dr. Ann Partridge, co-founder and director of the Program for Young Adults with Breast Cancer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. What’s known about breast cancer in younger womenDoctors are still scratching the surface in researching why breast cancer is becoming more prevalent at a younger age. They’re not breastfeeding as much, which does increase breast cancer risk. That would indicate that obesity likely isn’t much of a factor in the rising rates of breast cancer among younger women, said Toriola, of Washington University.

A new study found hundreds of unique viruses called bacteriophage on toothbrushes and shower heads. A recent study found hundreds of viruses on samples from toothbrushes and shower heads, including many that have never been seen before, let alone examined. These are not viruses that are going to infect you, these are viruses that are potentially cool," Hartmann said. In the future, phage might be a rich source of biotech innovations like phage therapy, in the same way pharmaceuticals have developed medicines from plants or animals. These viruses, however, are not the kind that will give you the common cold or flu (or worse). It’s amazing how much untapped biodiversity is all around us.”The study identified more than 600 viruses found in the samples taken from showerheads and toothbrushes. And for every bacterium, there’s potentially tens or hundreds or even thousands of viruses that infect it,” Hartmann said, noting that viruses mutate very quickly, too. She hypothesized that a bacterium in your mouth could transfer to your toothbrush, taking its viruses with it – and these could keep evolving on the toothbrush. “Microbes are everywhere all the time … We wouldn’t be able to digest our food or fend off infection if we didn’t have our microbes,” Hartmann said.

In 2022, oil flow in the Strait of Hormuz averaged 21 million barrels per day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Saul Kavonic, senior research analyst at MST Financial, said supply disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices significantly higher. Oil prices traded more than 3% on Monday, extending gains even after notching their sharpest weekly gain since early 2023 last week. "But seeing where the oil price sits right now the market doesn't seem to hold much probability for such a development at all," he added. "A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push oil prices to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150/bbl in 2008," he added.

For young people undergoing long-term treatment or struggling with mental health issues, Norwegian company No Isolation developed the AV1 robot, which can take a child’s place in class, serving as their eyes, ears, and voice, and helping them stay connected with their classmates. “They make the child important”The UK’s Chartwell Cancer Trust has a supply of 25 AV1 robots it provides to children with serious illness. Founding trustee Michael Douglas told CNN that the robots enable children to stay engaged with their education even while in intensive care. The scientists had previously documented orcas (Orcinus orca) in the region chasing both dusky dolphins and long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis). Dusky dolphins measure about 7 feet (2 meters) long and weigh up to 187 pounds (85 kilograms). The Humboldt Current orcas weren’t eating dolphins exclusively; they hunted leatherback sea turtles, South American fur seals and Humboldt penguins, according to the study. CNN —Nearly 200 chemicals connected to breast cancer are used in the making of food packaging and plastic tableware, and dozens of those carcinogens can migrate into the human body, a new study found. Of the recently detected chemicals in food packaging, 40 are already classified as hazardous by regulatory agencies around the world, according to the study. Rates of early-onset breast cancer in women under 50 are increasing, and experts said the trend cannot be explained by genetics alone. A January 2024 update to that list found 921 possibly carcinogenic chemicals, including 642 that may stimulate estrogen or progesterone production, another known risk factor for breast cancer. FCChumon, created by the Food Packaging Forum, is a list of food contact chemicals that have been detected in human breast milk, blood, urine and tissues.
