Follow live coverage of Wimbledon 2024Welcome to the Wimbledon briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament. On day eight of Wimbledon 2024, Elena Rybakina stepped up to her new billing, the ATP made a germy decision, and there was chaos on Court One. Elena Rybakina is one of three players left in the women’s field who has won a Grand Slam title before. Rybakina plays with a big serve and with flat power that keeps her ball low. More importantly, do we too often discount the data point of winning a tournament on grass the week before Wimbledon?

"There isn't a better place to be," Kenneth Harper, general manager of DAX Copilot at Microsoft, told CNBC in an interview. At HIMSS, Stanford Health Care announced it is deploying DAX Copilot across its entire enterprise. Gary Fritz, chief of applications at Stanford Health Care, said the organization had initially started by testing the tool within its exam rooms. Dr. Christopher Sharp, chief medical information officer at Stanford Health Care and one of the physicians who tested DAX Copilot, said it is "remarkably seamless" to use. Fritz said it is still early in the product life cycle, and Stanford Health Care is still working out exactly what deployment will look like.

Djokovic, Norrie and Fruhvirtova were not prepared to blame the ever-changing types of tennis balls used year-round at the sport's highest levels, but they weren't necessarily ready to absolve that issue completely, either. He said when the ATP asks male players at the end of each season what they think can be improved about the sport, he always mentions the fluctuations among the fuzzy tennis balls. Ten brands of tennis balls — and 19 distinct types — were used across the WTA in 2023. "It does change week by week." One significant difference between tennis and some other sports is that surfaces change, prompting ball changes.

Johannes Fritz, a maverick Austrian biologist, needed to come up with a plan, again, if he was going to prevent his rare and beloved birds from going extinct. But shifting climate patterns have delayed when the birds begin to migrate, and they are now reaching the mountains too late to make it over the peaks, locking them in an icy death trap. “Two or three years, and they’d be extinct again,” Mr. Fritz said. Determined to save them, Mr. Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan — because he had done it before.

Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY SportsAug 5 (Reuters) - World number nine Taylor Fritz said climate activists need to find a better way of protesting instead of "annoying" sports fans by interrupting events, after his Washington Open match against Andy Murray was briefly halted on Friday. "I get they're protesting, but there's just got to be a better way to do it," Fritz told reporters. I jokingly said, 'Honestly, this makes me want to go fly on jets more'," Fritz said with a smile. "I think they're supporting a good cause, but the way they're doing it... Who's going to want to listen when they're just annoying everybody?" Fritz returned in the evening to seal a 6-3 6-3 victory over Jordan Thompson to storm into the semi-finals, where he takes on Tallon Griekspoor.

July 26 - Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N) on Wednesday named former chief operating officer Jim Vena as its top boss, months after CEO Lance Fritz said he was stepping down, sending the U.S. railroad operator's shares up 6.7% in premarket trading. Vena, who will take the top job on Aug. 14, started his career in 1976 and was in the reckoning to lead Canadian National Railway Co (CNR.TO) after investors backed him for the role. Union Pacific, which connects 23 states in the western part of the country by rail, also elected Mike McCarthy as its board chairman. Despite its multiple interpretations and approaches, success is widely gauged by a railway’s operating ratio, a simple measure of how much it spends to make a buck. Union Pacific’s peers improved similarly, indicative of the antiquated ways the industry had been deploying resources. Union Pacific also found itself unable to bring back enough furloughed workers in areas where they were most needed. “In a significant departure from the railroad industry's recent past, we deliberately moved away from a singular focus on operating ratio,” he told lawmakers. “If we wanted to drive [operating ratio] lower over time, we could,” the board wrote in a letter to shareholders in late 2021.

Union Pacific posts weak profit as storm delays shipments
  + stars: | 2023-01-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Jan 24 (Reuters) - Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N) reported lower-than-expected fourth-quarter profit on Tuesday, hurt by delayed shipments amid labor shortages and a winter storm that crippled freight operations across the United States. Union Pacific, which connects 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country by rail, suffered shipment delays over the Christmas period as the winter storm Elliott hit its railroad networks. The storm brought sub-freezing temperatures and impacted business operations nationwide, also causing freeze-ins at several oil production sites. Union Pacific's operating ratio, a key profitability metric for railroads, was 61% in the quarter compared with 57.4% a year earlier. "Revenue growth was more than offset by elevated operating expenses from operational inefficiencies and a higher inflationary environment," Fritz said.
