Rafael Nadal, one of tennis’ all-time greats, is retiring from the sport. The 38-year-old Spaniard is playing his final tournament this week at the Davis Cup finals. He last played at the Paris Olympics, but continuing injury struggles have severely limited his time on the court over the past two seasons. “It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make,” he said last month in a video posted on social media. “I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way,” Nadal said.

CNN —For the first time in its 147-year history, Wimbledon will be removing line judges from all of its courts during the tournament. The All England Club announced on Wednesday that from the 2025 championships onwards, electronic line calling (ELC) will be used after it was successfully tested in 2024. ELC will replace the line judges who call “out” or “fault” during a match and will also be used in Wimbledon qualifying ahead of the tournament. Wimbledon successfully trialed the technology at this year's championships. Wimbledon’s adoption of the technology leaves the clay-court French Open as the only remaining grand slam yet to implement ELC.

CNN —Carlos Alcaraz led Team Europe to a comeback victory over Team World in the Laver Cup on Sunday, triumphing in both his singles and his doubles matchups. It marked Europe’s fifth win in the Laver Cup and first since 2021. “It’s great, obviously, we came here with a goal, all of us, that is to win the Laver Cup,” said Alcaraz. Alcaraz defeated Taylor Fritz to secure Laver Cup victory for Team Europe. For me, to spend time with these players in Team Europe, it’s a lot of fun.

CNN —Coco Gauff has parted ways with her coach, Brad Gilbert, following a series of poor results culminating in a failed defense of her US Open title. 6 lost in the fourth round of the US Open to American Emma Navarro, who had also bested her in the fourth round at Wimbledon just months before. “Mentally and emotionally, I gave it my all,” Gauff told reporters after her loss to Navarro. CNN —Twenty-two-time grand slam singles champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s Laver Cup due to fitness concerns, the tournament announced on Thursday. “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal said in a statement. The Laver Cup has not announced who will replace Nadal to join Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe. Nadal announced in April that he would play in this year’s Laver Cup in Berlin and was still expected to play despite withdrawing from the US Open due to concerns about his fitness.
