NANTERRE, France — Léon Marchand touched the wall to win the men’s 400-meter individual medley, letting out a roar and cementing himself in French athletic history forever. His time of 4:02.95 set a new Olympic record, previously held by Michael Phelps, and earned him the first Olympic gold medal of his career. American Chase Kalisz, the Tokyo gold medalist in the event, failed to qualify for the final earlier on Sunday. It’s deafening in here as Léon Marchand is introduced ahead of the 400 IM final. So has his coach, Bob Bowman, who knows a thing or two about this spotlight having coached Michael Phelps throughout the entirety of his illustrious career.

Still, as the U.S. men’s team starts its Olympic run Sunday, it begins with a roster that has drawn countless comparisons to the Dream Team. On paper, the U.S. men’s team is arguably the best team assembled since 1992. Durant is the most prolific scorer in U.S. men’s history and could, if the Americans win gold in Paris, become the most decorated Olympic men’s basketball player. A loss in the knockout stages, when there are no more second chances, and a Dream Team redux becomes a historic nightmare. In that scenario, the U.S. men’s team would be remembered forever, even if not quite held in the same reverence as the Dream Team.

For once, Didier Deschamps could reflect on a news conference that passed by almost without incident. On Tuesday, the country’s increasingly activist soccer team will face Spain in a European Championship semifinal. Sandwiched between the two was an appearance by Deschamps, the coach of the French national team, in the full megawatt glare of the world’s news media. When the gymnastics superstar Simone Biles tumbles and dances her way through her third Olympics this month, the choreography she performs in her floor routine will be seen on hundreds of millions of screens around the world. The Biles effect has brought with it something unexpected for Milan at 51: success. When he turned to gymnastics choreography full-time, in 2017, he was in debt, having started a dance company that never took off, and still reeling from the psychological scars left by a tumultuous career in ballet. “I was furious with what I’d experienced in the dance world,” he said. “I loved the art form so much, but the behavior of the people I’d encountered in it disgusted me.”

CNN —France’s most streamed singer Aya Nakamura has joined the chorus of voices calling on the French electorate to vote against the far right in Sunday’s high stakes election. The National Rally party, which is slated to win big in this Sunday’s second round of voting, has drawn criticism and concern from French celebrities of dual nationality, worried about the impact of their immigration policy plans. The party, headed by 28-year-old Jordan Bardella, hopes to restrict dual nationals from accessing certain state jobs. In a separate post, Nakamura directly referenced the National Rally party, saying: “F*** the National Rally.” Nakamura later deleted the post, according to reporting from CNN affiliate BFMTV. France’s top sports stars have also been using their platforms to urge the public not to vote for the far right.

MADRID (AP) — The latest international break is proving costly for several European clubs, including Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid. Both teams will be depleted by the injury absences of important players affected by the “FIFA virus” while on duty with their national teams. MELBOURNE, Aug 1 (Reuters) - France coach Herve Renard apologised on Tuesday for his furious outburst at Brazil staff at the end of his team's tight win at the Women's World Cup. With Brazil seeking a late equaliser at Brisbane's Lang Park on Saturday, a frustrated Renard took umbrage in the technical area as injury time dragged on due to frequent stoppages. Pointing at his watch and yelling at the Brazil camp, Renard was restrained by one of his staff and angrily brushed away a match official who intervened. The win over Brazil put France top of the group but level with second-placed Jamaica on four points. Renard said he would make changes to his starting 11 to freshen up the squad, and suggested captain Wendie Renard, who scored the winner against Brazil, might get some time off.

The scandal — a sudden and violent attack by a mystery man; accusations and denials; tabloid headlines — led to worldwide attention and, years later, a feature-length movie about Harding. But to Diallo, a 28-year-old French soccer player being led up a police station stairwell, the mention of her name — “Have you heard of Tonya Harding?” — produced only a blank stare. Now, in France, a generation later, the police suspected a similar motive in an attack on Kheira Hamraoui, Diallo’s teammate at the French club Paris St.-Germain. Prosecutors last September charged Diallo with aggravated assault in the attack on Hamraoui. Documents in the case and leaks to the French news media have accused Diallo of masterminding a premeditated attack.
