Read previewIf Qualcomm sees it through, its takeover bid of Intel would likely be the biggest in Silicon Valley history. The possibility of Intel handing its 56-year history over to a younger rival emerged last week after several reports said that California-based semiconductor firm Qualcomm had made a takeover approach. That said, not everyone is convinced that Qualcomm needs Intel — or that a buyout would be a good idea for either company. My industry survey also indicates that Qualcomm is currently in takeover talks with Intel. A Qualcomm bid for Intel could face similar regulatory obstacles to the takeover attempt Nvidia made for Arm in 2020 and later abandoned in 2022.

Taipei/Hong Kong CNN —Nvidia and AMD have separately launched the next generation of their artificial intelligence (AI) chips in Taiwan, as a three-way race with Intel heats up. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia (NVDA), said Sunday that the company would roll out its most advanced AI chip platform, called Rubin, in 2026. The Rubin platform will succeed the Blackwell, which supplies chips for data centers and was announced only in March. But competition is growing, with major competitors AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) introducing new products in an effort to challenge Nvidia’s dominance. The new chip will succeed the MI300 and feature more memory, faster memory bandwidth and better computer performance, Su added.

Not only would that deal another huge blow to China’s tech ambitions, it would further deepen the divide between two digital worlds centered around the rival economic superpowers. Congress on Tuesday approved legislation that could compel ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a national ban. That leaves few options for ByteDance to secure the future of TikTok in the US, its biggest market with 170 million users. “This includes everything from who owns and operates data centers, to space-based internet satellites, to undersea cables and, of course semiconductors.”In that sense, the TikTok ban has its silver lining for Beijing. The past few days have been chaotic for the AI industry, with technology experts weighing what this could mean for the nascent sector and some of its key players. But Altman's move could simply be a case of "damage control" for Microsoft, according to Richard Windsor, founder of digital research company Radio Free Mobile. Microsoft began investing in OpenAI as early as 2019, initially with around $1 billion. "A large amount of that value is tied up in the founders and in the engineers that are inside the company," Windsor said. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic Acquire Licensing RightsNAIROBI, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Netflix (NFLX.O) said on Monday it is ending its free mobile plan in Kenya, which has allowed users to access a quarter of its shows and movies without paying over the past two years. "We definitely learnt a lot from the test," a Netflix spokesperson told Reuters, without giving details. Netflix is rolling out an advertisement-supported plan, offering subscribers a monthly plan at 4.99 pounds ($6.07), but the spokesperson did not comment on its availability in Kenya. Although low middle-income economies like Kenya offer streaming services big opportunities for subscriber growth, they also pose challenges as purchasing power dwindles due to inflation, industry executives said. Under the free plan, which will end on Nov. 1, viewers were able to watch Western-produced shows like "Money Heist" and "Bridgerton", and African ones like "Blood & Water".

It's called RISC-V, pronounced "risk five" — a rival chip design that is backed by some of Arm's own customers. While analysts told CNBC it's not an immediate threat, Arm itself warned that if it gains traction, it could pose a competitive risk. Arm designs what's known as an instruction set architecture (ISA) for chips known as processors or central processing units (CPUs). RISC-V in recent years has gained support from some of the world's biggest technology companies, many of which are also Arm customers. "Maybe we should have a second source just in case things start not going in our direction, or we have problems with Arm," he added, in reference to the thinking among some Arm customers.

June 9 (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co's (DIS.N) Hotstar will offer free streaming of cricket tournaments in India on mobile devices, a move similar to its top rival JioCinema, as it aims to court more users in the cricket-crazy country. Hotstar on Friday said it will offer the Asia Cup and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup tournaments at no cost to users. The company lost the streaming rights for the highly popular Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament to Reliance Industries' (RELI.NS) JioCinema earlier this year. JioCinema, which made the tournament free to watch, clocked a record 1.47 billion digital views in the first weekend of the tournament.
