In-store and online retail sales saw a 3.4% increase year-over-year on Black Friday, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. According to Mastercard, online sales were up 14.6% from last year. Despite warm weather lasting longer into the fall, apparel was popular with online shoppers. According to Adobe Analytics, online shoppers spent $10.8 billion on Friday compared to $9.8 billion in 2023. Shopify, an e-commerce site, reported that it set a new record for its Black Friday sales, which reached $5 billion globally.

The National Hurricane Center says Beryl is expected to be an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane when it reaches the Windward Islands by late Sunday or early Monday. A tropical storm warning has been issued for Martinique, and a tropical storm watch is in effect for Dominica. The first hurricane of the season is unusually earlyBeryl’s rapid intensification is very unusual this early into hurricane season, according to Brennan. If Beryl reaches Category 4 intensity before Thursday, July 4, it would be the earliest recorded Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic. CNN —Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph with stronger gusts, according to a 5 p.m. EST update from the National Hurricane Center. That this formed so early in the season – and in this part of the Atlantic – is a sign of the hyperactive hurricane season to come, according to research from Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. Normally, ocean temperatures aren’t warm enough in this region in June and July to help tropical systems thrive. That’s hardly the case this year, and one of the reasons behind record-high hurricane season forecasts over the past few months. Both have low odds of developing over the next week, but given the unusual early season action and favorable ocean temperatures, they will have to be watched closely.

But exemplifying the roller-coaster nature of his public career, Trump is also soon poised for a massive financial windfall. The case, related to payment to an adult film star ahead of the 2016 election, could lead to Trump being a convicted felon by November’s election. His legal team said last week the bond amount was a “practical impossibility” for Trump, whose wealth is tied up in skyscrapers and golf resorts. Trump’s legal team has also said he shouldn’t be required to sell assets to meet the deadline since doing so would create a fire sale devastating to his business. The White House has done its best not to comment on the case, to avoid giving Trump more political ammunition.

CNN Max will leverage the news network's global reporting resources, and will also offer new original programs, such as "CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield," Warner Bros Discovery said in a statement. It will function like a channel within the Max streaming platform. CNN Max will seek to capitalize on the immediacy of breaking news and analysis, differentiating CNN Max from the short-lived CNN+ streaming service, which launched in March 2022 and featured lifestyle programs. CNN's parent, Warner Bros Discovery, has been working to increase how much time subscribers spend on its Max streaming service, augmenting its HBO scripted series with Discovery's reality shows to keep viewers watching.

A veteran and former police officer described the haunting scenes he found when he arrived at the outlet mall in Allen, Texas, Saturday. The aftermath of the mass shooting there was “horrific,” Steven Spainhouer told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield on Sunday. Spainhouer said he was planning to meet his son, who works at the H&M store at the outlet mall, for lunch. Spainhouer drove to the outlet mall and said when he showed up, he saw many people fleeing the scene and counted seven bodies on the ground. Spainhouer added that both he and his son will receive counseling for what they witnessed Saturday.

CNN —The US Coast Guard is suspending its search for three missing Americans last heard from on April 4 near Mazatlán, Mexico, according to a Coast Guard news release. The search was suspended “pending further developments” after Mexican Navy and US Coast Guard responders “conducted 281 cumulative search hours covering approximately 200,057 square nautical miles” with no sign of the missing vessel or passengers, the release said. Kerry O’Brien, Frank O’Brien and William Gross are all “experienced sailors,” according to an earlier joint statement from their families. “An exhaustive search was conducted by our international search and rescue partner, Mexico, with the U.S. Coast Guard and Canada providing additional search assets,” said Commander Gregory Higgins, command center chief of Coast Guard District 11. Winds potentially over 30 knots and seas 15 to 20, maybe more, feet at the time of their voyage,” Higgins told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield on Saturday.
