A photo showing several masked individuals walking past a burning garbage pile near the Eiffel Tower was captured on the eve of the EURO 2016 football tournament final and does not portray the ongoing riots in June and July 2023 in France.
French streets have been gripped by a wave of rioting following the death of a teenager of north African descent who was shot by police on June 27 (here).
However, the image was shot in July 2016 by Reuters photographer Stephane Mahe and is visible online with the caption: “Garbage burns during clashes near the Paris fan zone at the Eiffel Tower during the Portugal v France EURO 2016 final soccer match, in Paris, France, July 10, 2016” (here).
The photo shows the scene after French police fired tear gas to disperse dozens of people trying to enter the “fan zone” at the foot of the Eiffel Tower to watch the 2016 Euro final (here)VERDICTMiscaptioned.
