Today, he is best associated with Tintagel Castle, where remains of a settlement dating back to the fifth century perch strikingly on an islet off the wild coast of Cornwall. Bettmann Archive/Getty ImagesFor Stoyle, it’s likely that the myth of Arthur has at least its roots in fact. This Arthur was played by Clive Owen in the 2004 film, “King Arthur,” alongside Keira Knightley as Guinevere. The sixth-century “Artognou stone," discovered in 1998, has linked Tintagel with King Arthur for some scholars, though others dismiss it. Of course, medieval history writers were fast and loose with the facts.

Solid-state batteries have long been billed as the "holy grail" of sustainable driving. As the name suggests, solid-state batteries contain a solid electrolyte, made from materials such as ceramics. Automakers have invested billions of dollars in solid-state battery research and teamed up with developers to produce their own versions for mass production. Tomohiro Ohsumi | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesJapan's Toyota, for instance, has said it is aiming to bring solid-state batteries into mass production between 2027 and 2028. Yet, despite growing hype over the potential rollout of solid-state batteries, analysts remain skeptical about when they will actually make it to market.

PARIS, France — Auto giants have descended on the Paris Motor Show to showcase their latest concepts and production models, jostling to capture the public's attention with eye-catching designs and futuristic technologies. The pressure on European automakers is poised to ratchet up even further next year when emissions-reduction targets come into force. It is hoped that the Paris Motor Show can prove to be something of a turning point for Europe's auto industry, with many rolling out affordable EVs in an attempt to keep up with their Chinese competitors. The automaker welcomed visitors — including French President Emmanuel Macron — to take a close look at its Hypersquare steering wheel. Peugeot said the steering wheel's rectangular shape, which resembles a video game controller, will be in production from 2026.

Joan of Arc: Why does her image still resonate?
  + stars: | 2024-10-15 | by ( Tacita Quinn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —More than 800 years after her birth, Joan of Arc — a patron saint of France — remains an object of not just historical, but cultural fascination. Humble beginningsOne of five children in a peasant family in Domrémy, in north-eastern France, Joan was born in the year 1412. The Amazonian image of Joan of Arc in armor is perhaps the most recurrent one in popular culture, inspiring thousands, if not hundreds and thousands, of similar depictions. It also provided the inspiration for Carl Theodore Dreyer’s silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) starring Renée Jeanne Falconetti. She is also a cautionary tale for young women, a brutal warning of the fickle nature of celebrity and a symbol of morality and strength.

With a plum position atop many "Best Places to Travel" lists, Japan is on track to welcome a record-breaking number of travelers in 2024. Summer trips are up too, with inbound bookings doubling since last summer, a representative from the travel website Trip.com told CNBC Travel. In 2019, China welcomed some 49.1 million travelers — as of July this year, around 17.25 million foreigners had arrived, according to Chinese state media. "The USD/JPY exchange rate [moved] from approximately 140 in January 2024 to over 160 by July 2024, making Japan more affordable," said Chakraborty. Olympic organizers made a big bet in holding the 2024 Paris Olympics surfing competition at an ominous location in French Polynesia nearly 10,000 miles from Paris, with pretty much no space for spectators. Despite reef-inflicted injuries and moments when the location was questioned as just too dangerous, it would be hard to conclude Teahupo'o didn't provide its own golden moments. The U.S.' John John Florence, the world's top-ranked professional surfer, was eliminated in the third round by Australia's Jack Robinson, who took silver.
