POLAND - 2023/08/01: In this photo illustration, a Coinbase logo displayed on a smartphone with stock server lights in the background. France's AMF watchdog gave Coinbase a virtual asset service provider (VASP) approval, which is effectively a green light for the company to operate digital currency services in France. The VASP registration will allow Coinbase to offer custody of digital assets, buying or selling digital assets in legal tender, trading of digital assets against other digital assets, and operating a digital asset trading platform, the company said in a statement Thursday. The European Union has been working to introduce its Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, which would create a harmonized framework for crypto companies to operate in a regulated way in the bloc. Under MiCA, rather than having to secure registration in every EU market, crypto companies will eventually be able to use their VASP license in one country and "passport" into other countries to offer their services across the EU.

LONDON, July 19 (Reuters) - French bank Societe Generale (SOGN.PA) has become the first company in France to obtain a license for crypto services, as a growing number of mainstream financial companies embrace crypto globally this year. Societe Generale's crypto unit, Forge, is licensed as of Tuesday to offer services, including crypto custody, trading and sales, according to the website of France's AMF market regulator. A slew of crypto firms, including the world's biggest exchange Binance, have already registered with the AMF. Licensed firms, however, are subject to more onerous rules in areas including corporate governance, IT and compliance. Crypto markets have rallied in 2023, spurred by growing interest in the volatile asset class by major U.S. financial firms including BlackRock and Fidelity.

The complaint does not automatically mean French prosecutors will open a formal investigation following the complaint. The complaint, seen by Reuters, says Binance carried out marketing campaigns on social media platforms such as Instagram and Telegram when its official registration as a digital financial service was still pending with French authorities. The lawyers did not give the names of the Binance clients behind the complaint, citing privacy rules. News website Mediapart which first reported on the French complaint, cited Zhao as saying that "Binance has not been promoting its offers in France before it was allowed to". Binance has marketed itself globally, enlisting hundreds of so-called "Binance Angels" as volunteers across the world countries to promote the exchange to local crypto traders on social media.
Nov 9 (Reuters) - Two shareholders that together own more than 5% of France's Orpea (ORP.PA) have called for a shareholder meeting at the beleaguered care homes group as they try to rally opposition to its planned debt restructuring plan. "An unprecedented shareholder ruin is now emerging", family-owned Mat Immo Beaune and investment group Nextstone said in a letter sent to Orpea on Tuesday and reviewed by Reuters. Orpea said in June an independent audit had found evidence of financial wrongdoing, and in October warned of asset impairments and said it had requested talks with creditors. French media outlet l'Agefi on Monday reported ESG-driven fund Mirova had sold its 4% stake in Orpea. Shares in Orpea, which have lost 90% of their value this year, were down 2% at around 1100 GMT.
