Discovery, spin off their cable channels too? How might the cable bundle business model be impacted? “This is a very clear, direct statement by Comcast” that “they are exiting the cable network business,” Greenfield said.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off in the ABC presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024. The previous Trump administration didn't pursue those types of consumer protections. In contrast, Democrats, including Harris, have historically supported EVs and incentives such as those under the Biden administration's signature Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, Harris, if elected, can build on existing efforts of the Biden administration to deliver savings to more patients, they said. Trump also led multiple efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, including its expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults.

Smartmatic and Newsmax have reached a settlement in the voting technology company’s election defamation lawsuit against the right-wing news outlet shortly before the case was set to go to trial. The lawsuit focused on Newsmax's false claims that Smartmatic's machines rigged the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden. Smartmatic sued Newsmax Media in 2021, alleging it claimed Smartmatic’s devices rigged the 2020 election. Former President Donald Trump and his allies have continued to promote false claims that the 2020 election results were manipulated to favor Biden. Smartmatic in April settled a similar defamation lawsuit against One America News for a sum that was not disclosed publicly.

The pro-Trump cable outlet Newsmax and voting technology company Smartmatic settled a major 2020 election defamation lawsuit Thursday in a last-minute agreement to avoid a high-stakes trial. But in the run-up to the trial, Smartmatic’s hand weakened significantly, further raising the possibility of a settlement. Smartmatic has claimed that the lies promoted by Newsmax, Fox News, and other Trump allies destroyed its reputation and cost the company billions of dollars. However, as the Newsmax trial approached, Smartmatic’s lawyers reduced the company’s damages claim to approximately $370 million, according to statements in court. It often makes sense to settle rather than pay the expenses of a trial and possible appeals.”The settlement is the latest in a string of 2020 election defamation cases to reach an out-of-court agreement before trial.

DirecTV and Disney have reached a deal that brings Disney’s ESPN and other channels back to the pay-tv provider’s customers after a roughly two week blackout. On Saturday, DirecTV and Disney said they reached a deal that called for “market based terms” on pricing. DirecTV will be able to offer Disney’s streaming services in its packages and a la carte, the company said in a release Saturday. The amount of customers DirecTV lost during the dispute was not “immaterial,” said DirecTV Chief Marketing Officer Vince Torres at Goldman Sachs’ Communacopia & Technology Conference on Thursday. DirecTV offered its customers a $30 credit, financed by stopping payments to Disney as soon as the blackout began, Torres said.

Disney's networks went dark on Sept. 1 after the two sides could not agree to terms on fees and bundle structures. DirecTV called Disney anti-consumer, and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro called the responses DirecTV made to Disney's package offers "basically hypotheticals." The 93-year-old billionaire’s legal effort to rewrite the terms of an irrevocable family trust will remain confidential, a Nevada judge ruled Thursday. The judge rejected a petition from a coalition of major news organizations seeking to make the court proceedings public. The case has drawn intense interest from power players in the overlapping worlds of media, entertainment and politics. Murdoch is one of the most influential press barons of the modern age and his family owns prized assets such as Fox News and The Wall Street Journal. The family feud has been shrouded in secrecy because all of the case filings are under seal.

Last year, Falconi successfully petitioned the Nevada Supreme Court, which ruled that the public has a constitutional right to access Family Court cases. While the court is scheduled to hold evidentiary hearings next week, a decision from the court on media access could come at any time. If a judge does agree to unseal the case, it could have major ripple effects for Nevada family courts. Some have argued that sealing family court cases helps protect the privacy of vulnerable people. Falconi is not working with the media coalition, but said he hopes the national media attention on the Murdoch case will tangentially help his mission.

Disney and DirecTV are not likely to reach a deal in time for "Monday Night Football" according to people familiar with the matter. As a result of the fight, DirecTV customers were unable to see the U.S. Open and the first full weekend of the college football season. DirecTV alerted customers on Friday to competitor alternatives for watching ESPN and also said it would provide a $30 credit to customers. However, Charter and Disney reached a deal hours ahead of "Monday Night Football" that allowed customers to tune in that night. The dispute between DirecTV and Disney has led to mudslinging between the two companies reminiscent of most carriage fights.

New York CNN —DirecTV wants its customers to stick with the service during an increasingly nasty dispute with Disney that threatens to black out tonight’s “Monday Night Football” game. So DirecTV developed an unusual strategy: It’s paying customers to subscribe to a rival. Affected customers of DirecTV, DirecTV Stream and U-Verse can get a free weeklong trial of Fubo for two of its packages that carry ESPN and Disney networks and an additional $30 off the first month of service. DirecTV is also giving its customers a $30 credit to sign up for Sling’s orange tier that includes ESPN channels. DirecTV said the deals are a “small way” to help customers while its fight over the expired distribution agreement with Disney stretches into a second week.

CNN —DirecTV filed a complaint Saturday with the Federal Communications Commission alleging Disney did not negotiate in good faith as the two sides remain at an impasse on a distribution deal. ESPN owns the broadcast rights to “Monday Night Football,” which will be blacked out for DirecTV subscribers unless a deal is reached. “We continue to negotiate with DirecTV to restore access to our content as quickly as possible,” a Disney spokesperson told CNN on Sunday. The opening game for “Monday Night Football” features the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers. Murdoch is one of the most powerful and influential media titans of the modern age. The palace intrigue inside the Murdoch family has often lent itself to breathless public fascination, inspiring the HBO series “Succession” and behind-the-scenes books. The family is divided partly by differences in political opinion — and how those beliefs could shape the future of its sprawling media empire. Lachlan Murdoch, who took over as chairman of Fox Corp. and News Corp. last September, tends to be more aligned with his father’s conservative worldview. James Murdoch, Elisabeth Murdoch and Prudence Murdoch are believed to be more politically moderate.

New York CNN —A coalition of media organizations, including CNN, has petitioned a Nevada court to open up the secret proceedings surrounding a legal battle over the future of billionaire Rupert Murdoch’s media empire. Instead, Murdoch wanted to grant exclusive control to his eldest son and chosen successor Lachlan, according to The Times. But the entire process has been completely sealed in Nevada, with even the existence of the proceedings kept in secret. According to the Times, the trust only allows changes that are done in good faith with the purpose of benefiting all heirs. A trial to decide whether Murdoch is acting in good faith is expected to begin in September.

The Murdoch family feud taking place in an obscure Nevada court highlights the state’s surging popularity as a global center of family trusts and a friendly home to the world’s biggest fortunes. The Western state’s fast-growing industry of trust and estate attorneys, trust companies and facilitators keeps a deliberately low profile. At the center of the Murdoch case is the Murdoch Family Trust, which holds the powerful voting shares in News Corp. and Fox Corp. that effectively control the companies. (The trust also contains the family farm in Australia, the Murdoch art collection and its Disney shares.) “Normally a family would have some ties in Nevada to establish trust, either living here or having real estate,” Tyrell said.

It now consistently outranks Peacock, Max, Paramount+ and Apple TV+ in total viewing time, according to Nielsen — and is drawing even with Disney+. The streaming service, which is owned by the Fox Corporation, runs a different business model from those competitors.
