Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, has said that he believes women should not serve in combat and that he wants to see the military purged of “woke” officials who support diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Neither Fox News nor Trump’s transition team immediately responded to requests for comment about Hegseth’s on-air remarks about the military. Hegseth was an Army National Guard infantry officer, serving tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. “I’m straight up just saying that we should not have women in combat roles,” Hegseth said on the podcast. “Who?” Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said on Capitol Hill when he was asked Tuesday evening about Trump’s picking Hegseth.

New York CNN —Two years ago, Pete Hegseth relocated his family from New Jersey, near Fox News headquarters, to a small town outside of Nashville, Tennessee. On Tuesday evening, President-elect Donald Trump said Hegseth is his pick for Defense Secretary – a decision that shocked even some of his friends at Fox. Hegseth and Rauchet disclosed their relationship to Fox management when Rauchet was pregnant (and Hegseth was still married). After returning home from Iraq in 2006, Hegseth wrote that more troops were urgently needed. Hegseth wrote “Modern Warriors” in 2020 and “War on Warriors” earlier this year, both for Fox’s book imprint.

Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.

The visit was part of “Fox & Friends” co-host Lawrence Jones’ ongoing barbershop interview series. Fox edited out many of Trump’s rambling comments and false claims. Ironically, however, Fox edited several of Trump’s recent appearances on the network, including his visit to the barbershop. Fox also cut some of the former president’s insults, as when he mocked the Wall Street Journal, a sister property of Fox. Trump’s recent appearance on the Fox News program “MediaBuzz” was also pretaped and edited.

His alarming behavior may look to some like a candidacy melting down when the pressure is at its most extreme. With polls deadlocked, Trump’s behavior hasn’t yet disqualified him. And Trump’s voters still regard him as a vessel for their frustration with a political and economic system they believe has poorly served them. CNN —CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday rejected former President Donald Trump’s claims that the show edited its interview with Vice President Kamala Harris at her campaign’s direction. “Former President Donald Trump is accusing 60 Minutes of deceitful editing of our Oct. 7 interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Fox News anchor Bret Baier chose one way when interviewing former President Donald Trump last year, and a very different way when interviewing Vice President Kamala Harris this week in her first formal sit-down with the right-wing network. However, Baier did not talk over Trump nearly as much as he interrupted Harris. At times, Baier sounded exasperated, as when Trump claimed he won the 2020 election. Overall, Baier interrupted Harris at least 38 times in 27 minutes, about twice as often as Baier interjected with Trump (at least 28 times in 36 minutes). “When did you first notice that President Biden’s mental faculties appeared diminished?” Baier asked.

In the end, on Wednesday, both Harris and Fox News probably got what they wanted. But before the interview, Harris spokesman Ian Sams explained her thinking. If only a few thousand Fox viewers or traditional conservatives swapped sides, it could push some swing states in the vice president’s direction. Still, the risk for Harris is that her display in her first formal Fox interview could alienate some of those voters. It’s taken her several months to arrive at the assurance that she’d strike a strong contrast with Biden’s administration, which she unveiled in the Fox interview.

New York CNN —Fox News hosted an all-women town hall with former President Donald Trump, billed as an opportunity for female voters to ask the Republican candidate questions that matter to them. The Georgia town hall, where Trump took questions on reproductive laws, transgender rights and other issues, aired Wednesday morning. Some of the town hall attendees made it clear they were supporters of the former president, either in their questioning or in their attire. During another moment missing from Fox’s broadcast, Trump asked the crowd who they were voting for, leading to a chant of “Trump, Trump” breaking out by the attendees. According to CNN’s fact check of the event, Trump made at least 19 false claims in the one-hour town hall.

New York CNN —Fox News anchor Bret Baier is all too keenly aware that Fox’s viewers want him to affirm what they already feel. And his recent social media activity shows that he is supremely aware of the Fox base’s extreme disdain for Harris and distrust of the media. Baier, the anchor of Fox’s 6 p.m. “Special Report” newscast, is also the network’s chief political anchor. But because the Arizona call presaged Trump’s defeat, Fox was scolded and second-guessed by many of its own viewers, including the sitting president. CNN —Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has joined the ranks of NFL team owners after his purchase of a minority share of the Las Vegas Raiders, the NFL has announced. Brady’s purchase, which the Associated Press reports is for a 5% ownership stake in the franchise, was approved Tuesday at a meeting of NFL owners in Atlanta. “I’m incredibly humbled and excited to have been unanimously approved as an owner of the Las Vegas Raiders,” Brady said in a post on social media. The purchase agreement with the Raiders is the second partnership between Brady and Raiders owner Mark Davis. In March 2023, it was announced that Brady had acquired an ownership stake in the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, also owned by Davis.

New York CNN —With former President Donald Trump ruling out any more presidential debates between now and Election Day, CNN shifting course Thursday and invited both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris to participate in town hall events with voters. “Trump may want to hide from the voters, but Vice President Harris welcomes the opportunity to share her vision for a New Way Forward for the country. The network said the town halls will take place before a live audience of persuadable and undecided voters from Pennsylvania. Harris quickly accepted the invite, but Trump repeatedly shrugged it off, despite the Harris campaign’s attempts to goad him into participating. CNN —Nearly two months ago, CNN reached out to Melania Trump’s book publisher to request an interview with the former first lady ahead of her upcoming memoir. CNN —The FBI on Monday reported that violent crime dropped across the US last year, registering the steepest annual decline in murders in decades. But the report was almost entirely ignored by right-wing media outlets, which have pushed a false narrative that crime is surging under President Joe Biden. Overall crime fell by 3% and property crime fell by 2.4%. The routine release of FBI data comes just weeks before a high-stakes presidential election in which perceptions of crime and safety have become a key political flashpoint. The decision by right-wing media outlets to bury the report underscores the disconnect between public perception on the issue of crime and the reality of falling crime rates.

New York CNN —A Nevada judge has ruled that billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his family can hold a secret court battle over the future of his vast media empire behind closed doors. The judge rejected a petition by a coalition of media organizations, including CNN, The New York Times, NPR, the Washington Post, Reuters and ABC, to unseal the case and allow access. Though the Murdoch family is fighting over the trust and who will ultimately have control of the family businesses after the 93-year-old’s death, all of those involved agreed to sealing the case. But beyond that, everything in this case that it scheduled to begin next week with the Murdoch family likely in attendance, will remain sealed. The Harris campaign, exuding confidence after Harris baited Trump on stage Tuesday night, immediately said she would agree to a second debate with the ex-president. “When you win the debate, I don’t, I don’t know that I want to do another debate,” Trump said in a phone interview Wednesday morning on Fox News. Speaking with the hosts of “Fox & Friends,” Trump insulted Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, the two anchors that Fox has pitched as potential debate moderators in October. The Harris campaign, however, wants the vice presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance to happen next. Trump on Wednesday also assailed ABC after the debate moderators fact-checked the former president in real-time during the prime time Philadelphia matchup.

CNN —Hunter Biden on Sunday abruptly dropped a lawsuit he filed last month against Fox News over the network’s fictionalized miniseries that he alleged included sexually explicit images of him without consent. Representatives for Hunter Biden didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on Sunday. The miniseries, “The Trial of Hunter Biden,” was a six-part offering that featured a dramatized “mock trial” about Hunter Biden’s overseas financial dealings that led, in part, to his federal tax indictment and claims that fueled House Republicans’ stalled impeachment inquiry into his father. Fox News removed the miniseries from its platforms in late April after Biden threatened to file a lawsuit. While Hunter Biden ended his lawsuit against Fox, his legal challenges continue.

New York CNN —LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman is providing significant financial firepower to Smartmatic as the voting technology company fights Fox News and Newsmax over the right-wing networks’ repeated airing of 2020 election lies. A person with knowledge of the matter wouldn’t say exactly how much money Hoffman poured into Smartmatic but told CNN the eight-figure investment surpassed $10 million. Smartmatic is seeking billions of dollars in damages from Fox News, Newsmax and other right-wing figures that falsely accused the company of rigging the 2020 election. The voting technology company’s defamation lawsuit against Fox News is still in the fact-finding “discovery” phase and isn’t expected to go to trial until 2025.
