COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Sweden has temporarily halted development aid to Palestinian territories following a surprise attack by Hamas militants on Israel over the weekend, Development Minister Johan Forssell told a news conference on Tuesday. European Union foreign ministers are meeting on Tuesday to work out divisions among its 27 members over whether to continue aid payments to Palestinians a day after the European Commission backtracked on an announcement suspending all such aid. "We have a new situation after the 7th of October," Forssell told reporters. "Our decision today is that Sweden will ... pause development aid to Palestine until further notice." The government said it had also given the development agency SIDA the task of reviewing aid to Palestinians and to report by the start of December.

David Zaslav has been enjoying a stock runup after Wall Street analysts expressed increased optimism about Warner Bros. Discovery, with much cost-cutting behind it and growth ahead as it plans to launch a new streaming service. AT&T's WarnerMedia merged with Discovery in 2022 in a $43 billion deal, creating a content behemoth combining Warner's HBO, CNN, and famed Warner Bros. film studio with Discovery's lifestyle and reality fare. WBD shocked entertainment insiders by canceling high-profile projects like "Batgirl" and yanking episodes of shows including "Sesame Street" from HBO Max, and it has made other moves that concerned Hollywood creatives.
Ads are coming to HBO original series like "Game of Thrones" on HBO Max. Running ads alongside HBO originals could turn off viewers or possibly anger creators. HBO Max has kept commercials off its most prestigious programming — HBO originals series like "Mare of Easttown" and "Game of Thrones" (though ads appear in HBO Max originals like "The Flight Attendant" and "Hacks"). At the service's launch, Andy Forssell, then HBO Max EVP and GM, called the plan an effort to create an "elegant, tasteful ad experience that is respectful of great storytelling." With HBO Max, WBD is racing to make streaming profitable while slashing debt.
Discovery is exploring running ads on HBO originals like "Game of Thrones." HBO Max launched its ad-supported tier in June 2021 for $10 a month versus the streamer's $15 ad-free version. HBO Max capped ads at four minutes per hour, limited how often users would see the same ad, and said no ads would run on original HBO programming. Since then, HBO Max parent WarnerMedia has been acquired by Discovery, and under new CEO David Zaslav, the merged entity Warner Bros. It's also unclear whether WBD will charge a premium for ads appearing in HBO originals — and if so, how much.
"It's important for us to own the customer," the former head of HBO Max, Andy Forssell, told Bloomberg in August 2021. HBO Max will cost $14.99 a month through Channels, the same price at which it is available to consumers via other distribution platforms. HBO and HBO Max had 67.5 million combined subscribers, as of a July 2021 earnings report. Discovery said during its most recent earnings report last month that HBO, HBO Max, and Discovery+ had a combined 95 million subscribers, but didn't break out the numbers by service. The company plans to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into one streaming platform next year.
The EU argues the $430 billion Inflation Reduction Act, to take effect in January, will make the United States a world leader in the electric vehicle market at its expense. Czech industry and trade minister Josef Sikela said all 27 EU members were concerned. He told reporters before a meeting of national trade ministers that time was running out and expressed hope a solution could be found by Dec. 5 when top U.S. and EU officials will meet. He said ministers would discuss how to persuade the United States to modify its act. The objective would not be to launch into a subsidy race, which would be counter-productive," he said.
