Billionaire Tilman Fertitta has increased his ownership stake in Wynn Resorts to 9.9%, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Wynn Resorts and Fertitta declined to comment on his increased stake. He is frequently outspoken about issues that affect Las Vegas, whether it is Formula One or historic union wage contracts. Wynn Las Vegas is the top-of-the-line, uber-luxurious resort on the Strip, and it owns two high-end resorts in Macao. That position gave him a 6.2% stake in the company and made him the second-largest individual shareholder in Wynn, after co-founder Elaine Wynn.

Liberty Media announced Wednesday that it's spinning off most assets besides Formula One auto racing into a separate publicly traded company, called Liberty Live, and that CEO Greg Maffei is stepping down at year-end. After the split, Liberty Media will hold Formula One, which Liberty acquired in 2016 and later spun out as a tracking stock, and MotoGP, upon the closing of that transaction. The Liberty Media and Liberty Live split is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, and the sale of Liberty Broadband to Charter is projected to be completed in mid-2027. "Following today's announcements at Liberty Media and Liberty Broadband, all the Liberty acquisitions completed during my tenure are now in structures where shareholders can have more direct ownership in their upside," Maffei said in a separate release. Elevator test towers can go higher still. Elevator test towers are “a bit like a test track for a Formula One team,” said Tomio Pihkala, chief technology officer at Finnish elevator manufacturer Kone, in a phone interview. Like all skyscrapers, elevator towers need to withstand strong winds that can cause swaying and affect test conditions. The resulting oscillation simulates wind and earthquakes, which are among the biggest challenges in elevator development, according to TK Elevator. How F1 can help engineer the world's net-zero future
  + stars: | 2024-11-04 | by ( Chris Hawes | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
F1 produced 223,031 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2022, with almost 75% coming from travel and shipping. Unlike soccer, which produces more than 30 million metric tons per year by some estimates, F1 has the engineering capabilities to provide solutions. As reported in April, these goals are difficult to square with F1's decision to increase the number of races in its calendar. The final pedal F1 can push is energy efficiency, and teams are already looking for ways to transfer learnings from the track to their infrastructure. "We want to take that approach ... and apply it to the building and infrastructure side of the campus as well."

"When you think about F1, you think about speed, you think about innovation, you think about efficiency," Ellen Jones, F1's Head of ESG, told CNBC's "Inside Track." The race cars themselves make up a tiny fraction of the sport's total emissions, at just 0.7%. In 2019, F1 established its sustainability strategy, setting an ambitious target to become net zero by 2030. "The key about our net zero by 2030 commitment is it's not just F1. With 24 races on the schedule and only a handful of days in between, forecasting track performance is critical to ensuring engineers are ready to make any necessary changes. While teams are allowed up to 60 operational staff at the track on race days, each is communicating with analysts back at headquarters. "Everyone there will be looking at their computer and providing feedback to the racetrack engineers with recommendations that can be actioned onto the race car." With the cost-cap limiting budgets to $135 million per year, automating repetitive tasks is crucial to ensuring teams are using their resources efficiently.

Meet the people driving billions of dollars in deals for Formula 1
  + stars: | 2024-10-20 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
In the high-octane world of Formula One, success is driven by more than just talented drivers and engineers. F1's dealmakers have brokered billions of dollars in revenue off the circuit, generating cash from several places, including media rights, ticket sales, merchandising and sponsorship. Our main source of success is because we are able to connect with our fans, understanding that we are a worldwide business," said Stefano Domenicali, Formula One Group CEO, in an interview with CNBC's Inside Track: The Business of Formula 1. In fact, it was a major deal — Liberty Media's acquisition of F1 in 2017 — that propelled the sport forward. That's where we need to be strong, and that's maybe the reason why we are so successful," he added.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen wins U.S. Grand Prix sprint race
  + stars: | 2024-10-19 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Red Bull Racing's Dutch driver Max Verstappen celebrates winning the United States Formula One Sprint at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on October 19, 2024. He now trails Verstappen by 54 points with six grand prix and two sprint races left in the season. Verstappen has won the U.S. Grand Prix the last three years but has not started the race from pole position since 2021. The sprint victory should renew Red Bull's confidence it has improved a car that Verstappen has alternately called "undrivable" and "a monster" at time this season. The once-dominant Verstappen had not scored a victory of any kind since the Austrian Grand Prix sprint race back in June, and his last victory in a grand prix came a week earlier in Spain.

This is the story of how the marathon has changed, told by some of the people behind the technological revolution. Marathon running is done individually but succeeds best when athletes work in packs, either with official pacemakers or using each other to share workloads and draft. They put one into a marathon shoe in a 2006 study, got sub-elite athletes to run on treadmills, and found a 1.3 per cent benefit in terms of energy reduction. “We set up at that point (2016), one of the most in-depth and best controlled studies on running shoes. It has offered adherents myriad “exclusive” opportunities to join clubs to give counsel to Mr. Trump, and it has repeatedly claimed that Mr. Trump is personally reviewing lists of small donors. The New York Times looked at some 7,400 emails sent by the Trump campaign since Mr. Trump entered the presidential race. Ms. Harris, and before her Mr. Biden, have far outpaced Mr. Trump in fund-raising this cycle, including from small-dollar donors. But both in sheer number (about 75 emails per week, on average, throughout this campaign cycle) and in syntax, the former president’s campaign emails stand out. Similar questions have arisen about contests Mr. Trump’s campaign and political action committee have run in years past.

CNBC has valued the Miami Dolphins as the league's eighth most valuable team at $7.1 billion, which does not include the stadium. The Miami Dolphins and the NFL declined to comment, and Tsai's BSE Global did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
