South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has accepted the resignation of Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and nominated his ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Choi Byung-hyuk, as new defense minister, Yonhap news reported on Thursday. Kim has been reported as having advised Yoon to declare martial law on Tuesday, which was lifted after a parliament vote demanding Yoon reverse it. Parliament introduced a motion early on Thursday to impeach him over the botched attempt to impose martial law, but his party vowed to oppose the move, throwing the process into doubt. The main opposition Democratic Party has called Yoon's martial law attempt a treasonous act, and its lawmakers could lead a vote for the bill as early as Friday. U.S. officials said they were caught completely off guard by Yoon's martial law declaration, which Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said was "badly misjudged."

With so much at stake, CNN has identified 10 races to watch on Tuesday – grouped into buckets that nod to broader themes across the House landscape. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided against seeking a fourth term, instead launching a campaign for governor in 2025. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has crafted a moderate profile by challenging his party on issues ranging from spending to immigration. This year she faces a challenge from GOP state Rep. Gabe Evans, a fellow Mexican American and a former Army helicopter pilot and police officer. GOP Rep. Zach Nunn, an Air Force officer, was first elected in 2022 – defeating Democratic Rep. Cindy Axne by about 2,000 votes.

Lan Sak, Thailand AP —Mourners wept and monks prayed at a cremation ceremony Tuesday in a small town in central Thailand for 23 young students and teachers who died in last week’s bus fire on a school field trip. A large cremation site was set up close to the temple in Lan Sak town whose compound hosts the school that was attended by the victims. Six teachers and 39 elementary and junior high school students were on the bus when it caught fire on October 1 on a highway in Pathum Thani, a northern suburb of Bangkok. Transport officials were being scrutinized after information emerged that the bus had passed an inspection about four months before the fire. Police believe that a gas tube from one of the canisters had come loose, with sparks then setting the leaking gas on fire.

Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. The path to the House majority runs through all four of the districts where these ads ran. Since then, both doctors and patients have often become key personal messengers on abortion for Democrats. But Republicans blasted House Majority PAC over the ads, calling them misleading and accusing the group of spreading falsehoods about GOP incumbents and candidates.

An initial DNA test on remains believed to be those of Joseph Couch, the suspect in the Interstate 75 shootings, was inconclusive, but an autopsy confirmed the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, state officials said. The soft tissue DNA test was “inconclusive due to extreme decomposition of the body,” and a further DNA test with material extracted from bone will be completed, the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said in a news release. The remains were found in deep brush by a highway exit in Laurel County, which is where London is and where the shootings occurred, state officials said. A couple livestreaming the search for Couch's body helped in the effort and the discovery, state police said. The DNA test from bone is expected to begin Friday and take 24 to 48 hours, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet said.

A week and a half after a highway shooting spree and an ensuing manhunt for an “armed and dangerous” suspect, officials in Kentucky have located a body near where the shooting happened. Kentucky State Police troopers are working to confirm the identity of the body discovered in Laurel County, officials said Wednesday. Laurel County Sheriff's OfficeThe gun used, an AR-15 rifle, was purchased legally in London the day of the shooting, authorities said. Law enforcement officials said the gunman parked near a ridge overlooking the highway to fire upon vehicles. Just before the shooting, a woman who shares a child with Couch called dispatchers in Laurel County and shared a chilling message.

A grueling manhunt for the suspect wanted in a highway shooting spree stretched into its fifth day as authorities said they believe he retreated deep into a forested swath of southeastern Kentucky with no indication he has fled elsewhere. “There’s so many people that have eyes on this investigation around the world that now we should have gotten a pretty good tip that he exited the woods,” Pennington told reporters 72 hours into the operation. Amid the search, authorities went to his home in Woodbine, about 23 miles from the shooting site, to collect evidence. The search by foot remains daunting, Pennington said, as temperatures have stayed above 80 degrees during the day. “I hope he doesn’t have water, and I hope he doesn’t have food," Pennington said at a news conference Tuesday.

BANGKOK — Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for appointing to his cabinet a former lawyer who served jail time, raising the specter of more political upheaval and a reset of the governing alliance. Real estate tycoon Srettha becomes the fourth Thai premier in 16 years to be removed by verdicts by the same court, after it ruled he violated the constitution by appointing a minister who did not meet ethical standards. Deputy premier Phumtham Wechayachai is expected to take over as caretaker prime minister. If successful, she would be Thailand’s third Shinawatra premier after Thaksin and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra. It was April 2022, weeks after Russia had invaded Ukraine and touched off an international crisis, and two Republican lawmakers had rushed to be the first to travel to the besieged country. Now Ms. Pelosi wanted to quickly arrange her own visit — and she wanted Mr. Crow, whose national security background distinguished him in his party, to come with her. A late-night phone call from Ms. Pelosi to Mr. Crow would have been improbable when he first came to Congress in 2019. Hailing from a competitive district in Colorado, he had run as a centrist and avowed detractor of the liberal Ms. Pelosi, and after he knocked off a Republican incumbent he pledged that he would not vote for her for speaker. But since then, his credentials — including three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and a Bronze Star, as well as a law degree and a background in private-sector investigations — have made Mr. Crow a go-to lawmaker for Democratic leaders on difficult national security issues.

Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He surrendered two days later, and in April he pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding officers during the Capitol riot, federal prosecutors said. Judge James E. Courtesy Vernon ReffittThousands have found themselves in Reffitt’s position due to a little-known law that prohibits veterans from receiving both disability and special separation pay. Under the law, the VA has to recoup special separation benefits from veterans before those eligible can begin receiving disability payments. Army veteran Daphne Young said she would not have taken the separation pay had she known. Under the law, veterans have a chance to pursue a waiver of their recoupment responsibilities for voluntary separation pay, but the standards are high.
